In an effort to help meet the need for local students, the City of Olathe Municipal Court is accepting school supply donations for a $50 credit toward traffic or parking fines. Partnering with the Olathe Public Schools Foundation to reach the goal of providing more than 2,500 backpacks for Olathe’s most vulnerable students, the school supply campaign will run July 7 through Aug. 4, 2026.

A purchase of $15 worth of new school supplies will net a maximum $50 credit toward traffic (infractions only) or parking fines. Individuals must bring their receipt with the donations.

This week is Waste and Recycling Workers Week – the perfect time to shed light on one of Olathe’s many amazing trash truck drivers. Bill Oxley has worked for the City of Olathe for 10 years operating a truck on a regular route. During this time, he built relationships with many residents on his route, including a young boy named Riley.

Bill was recently promoted to Team Supervisor at the Olathe Community Recycling Center, taking him away from his previous route.

Because he missed seeing Bill each week, Riley’s mom made a special trip for the two to be reunited at the recycling center. When Bill noticed the car, he asked, “is that Riley?!” Riley was thrilled to get to catch up with his favorite trash man.

When Rick Roberts started working for the City of Olathe 40 years ago, the city looked wildly different. Gravel roads crisscrossed much of town. The east side of I‑35 was mostly open space. Santa Fe was just a two‑lane road stretching all the way to Martin City. But even as the city around him transformed, one thing stayed steady: Rick showed up, got to work, and made Olathe better every day.

Rick began his career performing crack seals, a job he stuck with for more than a decade before moving into wide crack and depressions work, where he still serves today.

That spirit of teamwork and dependability has followed Rick throughout his career, and now he’s the one others turn to when they need answers. Breaker acting up? Ask Rick. Wondering about the history of the building, or even the city itself? Rick knows. Need someone who understands a little bit about everything—and a lot about some things? That’s Rick. It’s why his coworkers call him the “Truck Master,” and why he’s widely known as the go‑to guy.

Over four decades, Rick has seen remarkable change—not just in the city, but in the work behind the scenes. He remembers when the snowplow operation consisted of a small asphalt slab and a tarp thrown over salt. Today, Olathe uses modern storage facilities and advanced materials, from treated salt to brine and beet juice mixtures. Rick has happy memories of the old days, but he’s grateful for the upgrades, especially equipment improvements that prevent injuries and make the job more efficient.

His expertise extends far beyond the streets of Olathe. Rick has deployed to help communities recover after tornadoes in Parsons, Greensburg, Linwood, and Wyandotte County. Whether identifying hazardous materials or helping clear debris, he was ready to show up for others.

“If you love what you’re doing, you’re never going to work a day in your life,” Rick said. “And I love what I do.”

For 40 years, Rick Roberts has helped build Olathe into the thriving community it is today. And while the city has changed dramatically, Rick’s dedication has not. He has spent a lifetime making Olathe stronger, safer, and better.
