When Rick Roberts started working for the City of Olathe 40 years ago, the city looked wildly different. Gravel roads crisscrossed much of town. The east side of I‑35 was mostly open space. Santa Fe was just a two‑lane road stretching all the way to Martin City. But even as the city around him transformed, one thing stayed steady: Rick showed up, got to work, and made Olathe better every day.
Rick began his career performing crack seals, a job he stuck with for more than a decade before moving into wide crack and depressions work, where he still serves today.
That spirit of teamwork and dependability has followed Rick throughout his career, and now he’s the one others turn to when they need answers. Breaker acting up? Ask Rick. Wondering about the history of the building, or even the city itself? Rick knows. Need someone who understands a little bit about everything—and a lot about some things? That’s Rick. It’s why his coworkers call him the “Truck Master,” and why he’s widely known as the go‑to guy.
Over four decades, Rick has seen remarkable change—not just in the city, but in the work behind the scenes. He remembers when the snowplow operation consisted of a small asphalt slab and a tarp thrown over salt. Today, Olathe uses modern storage facilities and advanced materials, from treated salt to brine and beet juice mixtures. Rick has happy memories of the old days, but he’s grateful for the upgrades, especially equipment improvements that prevent injuries and make the job more efficient.
His expertise extends far beyond the streets of Olathe. Rick has deployed to help communities recover after tornadoes in Parsons, Greensburg, Linwood, and Wyandotte County. Whether identifying hazardous materials or helping clear debris, he was ready to show up for others.
“If you love what you’re doing, you’re never going to work a day in your life,” Rick said. “And I love what I do.”
For 40 years, Rick Roberts has helped build Olathe into the thriving community it is today. And while the city has changed dramatically, Rick’s dedication has not. He has spent a lifetime making Olathe stronger, safer, and better.
