Mrs. Wichhart’s Banking and Finance students had some prime-time celebrations at today’s Olathe South Pep Assembly.

These juniors worked for close to 3 months on a client-connected project with Mr. Darren Jones, Branch Manager of the Farmer’s Insurance Group Federal Credit Union (FIGFCU) in Overland Park, Kansas.

The goal: generate ideas for services, programs, incentives that might help FIGFCU attract and retain more GenZ members.

Students paired their learning about banks, credit unions, and financial institutions with market research, and pitched their best ideas!

On the day of presentations, the CEO was trapped in Chicago with bad weather — but that didn’t stop her from allowing the local OP team to sweeten the pot with $750 for the winning group! ($250 for each team member!)

So many great ideas were pitched - and truth be told, a smorgasbord of the ideas from various groups are in the works to be rolled out company-wide. We are so proud of the presentations and research that went into these projects!

At Olathe South High School we value Accountability, Integrity, and Resiliency!

Today our BFA’ers established their team’s core values, and assessed their skills. We wil begin establishing our classroom values and our meeting norms.

We also learned a little about skills. These students have a wide variety of skills.

Our crew of 27 BFA Freshies made our journey out to TimberRidge Adventure Center for a day of team building and fun!

We overcame communication challenges, worked on active listening, and proved that we were capable of working through new situations. These students really stepped up to help each other and pushed past their comfort zones.

We also pushed through the physical discomfort of the high temperatures and oppressive humidity {and lack of cell phones, thanks Ms. Bell…}

We are excited to welcome the entire incoming class of Freshmen on Wednesday!

Did you know that Olathe South High School has a Tax Preparation class?

The IRS has a tax program called Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA). Our students, under the guidance of their teacher, Mrs. Wichhart, complete tax returns for people in our community.

Last week, the Olathe South Tax Prep class traveled to Lakemary Center and completed 20 tax returns for their community members.

Lakemary Center is a nonprofit organization that provides education, mental and behavioral health, and social services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

It may garner a chuckle from some…

But here at Olathe South High School, we are excited to share that we teach all about taxes in our Tax Prep class! Students are able to actually help file taxes and help members of our community through our VITAS tax program headed up by Mrs. Tiffany Patterson Wichhart! We are one of only 80 schools across the country that offers this opportunity to our students.

Financial literacy is a Kansas state education requirement. Our Business Department feels honored to teach relevant tax basics.

We love and support our math teachers during every season, including parallelogram season, because they are increasing mathematical, and critical problem solving skills that can transfer over into other facets of life. Tax codes change, but slope-intercept form doesn’t.

It is Career & Technical Education Month! As part of the Olathe Public Schools Career Pathways area - the Business Finance Academy is showcasing all the benefits of bringing career and technical skills into the classroom!

Our Business Finance students are gaining skills they will help them post-HS graduation. Whether our students pursue college, military service, or the workforce, we know that they will be equipped to meet the changing demands of an ever-changing society.

Lots of fun commentary, and learning taking place as students had to evaluate their choices.
