This Thanksgiving, the Tacoma Rescue Mission is calling on the community to come together in an extraordinary act of compassion and care. With over 100,000 Pierce County residents recently losing government food assistance, the need for meals and support has never been greater.

To meet this growing challenge, the Tacoma Rescue Mission and the Tacoma Dome will host a massive community Thanksgiving dinner, aiming to serve more than 1,000 individuals and families who are struggling during this season of gratitude.

We are asking for urgent support to make this event and ongoing care possible:

- Donate Financially: Every dollar helps provide meals and care. Give at https://trm.org/meals
- Donate Food: Drop off Thanksgiving staples and other food items at 425 South Tacoma Way (Mon. - Sun., 6:00 am – 6:00 pm).
- Donate Items: Cold-weather gear and hygiene essentials can be delivered to our Donation Center at 504 S 30th St (Mon. - Sat., 9:00 am – 5:00 pm).
- Volunteer: Sign up to help prep food, serve meals, and care for guests at the Tacoma Dome for Thanksgiving Dinner at https://www.trm.org/volunteer

Our Thanksgiving Community Dinner will be on Thanksgiving day, 11/27/25, from 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm at the Tacoma Dome. Please help spread the word to our friends on the street, families and individuals facing food insecurity, and anyone who is left wondering where they will get their next meal this holiday.

This is more than a meal, it’s an opportunity to restore hope and dignity for our neighbors in need. Together, we can make Thanksgiving a day of warmth, community, and gratitude.

We also want to highlight and share our overwhelming gratitude with the Tacoma Dome for offering their space at no cost to make this community meal possible.

It's almost time for the next Taproot Coalition meeting!

Join us Friday, November 7th at 12pm to talk about how the government shut down and SNAP uncertainty has impacted support for unhoused families. I hope to see you there!

The risks to unhoused people are already enormous. For those who are pregnant or postpartum, the challenges multiply — and yet, there are too few resources designed to meet their needs.

On the first day of August in downtown Tacoma, I saw a young woman smoking fentanyl in a crowded church parking lot a few feet away from a narcotics anonymous meeting.

Did you know that just because someone is unhoused does not mean that they are unemployed? It is a myth that unhoused people do not want, or even refuse, to work. There are many people maintaining employment and trying to better their circumstances. Many of them are parents, also taking care of their children.

Imagine what a typical day must be like.

"The truth is that many do – in fact, a 2021 study from the University of Chicago estimates that 53% of people living in homeless shelters and 40% of unsheltered people were employed, either full or part-time, in the year that people were observed homeless between 2011 – 2018."

The National Alliance to End Homelessness is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization committed to preventing and ending homelessness in the United States.
