From shelter pet to family member. Meet our next Happy Tail.

"My husband and I adopted a dog from your location 13 years ago, named Angus. I’m sure many say this, but he truly was the best dog. We were never planning on leaving with an animal, but he stole our hearts immediately. He went on so many travels and adventures with us. A couple of years ago, he went on his last backcountry hike. We still took him on drives in the Montana mountains that he loved to roam. However, yesterday we had to say our goodbyes to the greatest dog we ever had. We never regretted walking into your doors 13 years ago and walking out with him. We just want to say thank you for allowing us to be his family, and we loved him so much. He wasn’t just our dog, but our best friend, and we always called him our son. We will be missed greatly."

Thank you for giving Angus the best life a pet can ask for.

How can you stop the spread of disease in the community and keep your cats safe at the same time?

It’s simple. Start with a vaccine. A single vaccine can help protect your cats from panleukopenia, and local organizations such as Angel Fund OKC offer the vaccine for just $10. For the price of a couple of cups of coffee, you can help protect your feline friend for up to a year.

If you interact with new cats, be sure to wash your hands after every interaction.
Being a responsible pet owner means taking the necessary steps to keep your pets safe. Panleukopenia is a deadly disease, but with the right precautions, it can be easily prevented.

It is practically impossible to know the background story of a stray shelter pet, but their personality can give you a glimpse into the life they had before. Their ability to ride in a car or walk on a leash, their friendliness and even their shy curiosity can be signs that they were once loved and cared for.

For some reason, they ended up at a shelter, but that doesn’t mean their story has to end here. They are still looking for love and a home where they can spend their remaining years.

Help us give these five seniors the ending they deserve. Open your heart, give them a home and help them leave the shelter forever today.

Helping shelter pets is as easy as a walk in the park. Literally! 🌳

Visit us Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. and take one of our fully adoptable dogs for a walk on the Trosper Park trail or to your favorite pet-friendly park in our city. Just remember to be back at the shelter by 4:30 p.m.

If you meet someone interested in adopting, let them know where to adopt. It’s a win-win for everyone! You get your steps in, and our shelter dog gets a chance to explore the outdoors.

With every step you take, you can help us find forever homes.

*Participating dogs must be 6 months or older and are identified by a blue kennel card.

From shelter pet to family member. Meet our next Happy Tail.

"We adopted Sheldon. He had been back to y’all’s shelter 3 times, at times as a stray, until he found his forever home with us. Originally, we were only planning to foster our senior guy until he found a home, but the longer he stayed, the more he made a spot both in our home and in our hearts. So, we made it official. Since then, he has been the best boy. He spends most of his day relaxing on the couch. Being a senior doesn’t stop his zoomies, though. He LOVES all things toys. Chew toys, ropes, plush, you name it. He even carries them outside to go potty. He loves sunbathing and cuddling up in bed. He’s truly a wonderful dog, and we are so glad we were able to save him!"

Why do we close our cat intake because of one disease?

Panleukopenia is highly contagious and has a high death rate. Treatment and care can be expensive and do not guarantee success. In some cases, a cat can show symptoms up to two weeks after exposure, and once exposed, kittens can succumb to the disease within 3-5 days.

Because of the nature of this virus, when a cat enters our doors, we need to keep them quarantined. This means we need extra time and resources for every feline in our care.

We are working to quarantine and care for the cats in our current care, but that is only possible by pausing intake of healthy cats brought to us.

Thank you for your understanding and for all your help in stopping the spread of this disease.

Do you have a favorite pet store or pet service provider? We'd love to have them at DOGtober Festival!

Interested businesses can email 📧[email protected] to register. It is free to register. The deadline is September 20, so don't miss out!

DOGtober Festival is a great opportunity to connect responsible pet owners with local businesses and services that help pets live happy, healthy lives.

We've been fortunate to have incredible businesses join us over the past two years, including Hollywood Feed. Last year, when rain rolled through the event, they didn't hesitate to jump in and help fellow vendors protect their materials. Then, they went a step further by donating more than 20 boxes of high-quality dog food to help lift everyone's spirits.

Moments like these remind us just how amazing our community is.

If you know a pet-related business that would be a great addition to DOGtober Festival, let them know the event is quickly approaching.
