This Labor Day, we remember that the history of work in America is also intertwined with the history of incarceration.

As the labor movement of the late 1800s fought for the dignity, safety, and rights of American workers, thousands of incarcerated people were being leased to private businesses as a source of cheap labor.

That history asks us a question that still matters:
Who do we believe is worthy of the dignity of meaningful work?

At CJAMM, we walk alongside people returning from incarceration as they seek employment, rebuild stability, provide for their families, and find their place again in their communities.

This Labor Day, we honor the dignity of work and the dignity of every person doing the work of rebuilding a life.

Oklahoma has few work release opportunities for people preparing to return to communities across the state and this is only one of the many reasons transitional housing is crucial.

Work release and other transitional programs can help build the bridge between incarceration and life after release but that bridge can’t end at the prison gate.

At Exodus House, individuals can receive the support, structure and accountability they need as they take the next steps toward stable housing, meaningful employment, healthy relationships and successful reentry.

New Day Camp is made incredible every summer because of the amazing kids who fill it with life and the incredible volunteers who make it possible.

Kat had the chance to sit down with Jeremy this morning, one of our longtime New Day volunteers who has given so much of himself to this ministry over the years. The stories, memories, and relationships built at camp don’t end when the week is over; they remain with both the kids and the volunteers. To reference the movie "Inside Out", New Day is a core memory week.

Jeremy wasn’t able to join us this past summer, but rumor has it New Day 2027 might just be somewhere on his radar. 😉 No pressure, Jeremy…
