S.H.I.N.E. = Start Helping Impacted Neighborhoods Everywhere SHINE crews assist neighborhoods, schools, parks, and other public entities by cleaning up roads, waterways and removing graffiti.

SHINE is a restorative justice effort that offers an alternative to incarceration by providing a community service program that works to beautify Oklahoma County. Begun and implemented by Oklahoma County Commissioner Brian Maughan, SHINE offers alternatives to incarceration, helps to beautify the district, and builds pride in neighborhoods, while stewarding Oklahoma tax dollars well. ive effort brings together both public and private organizations to strengthen the quality of life in Oklahoma County and to offer rehabilitation and restoration to non-violent offenders, which supports the decrease in the state’s incarceration and recidivism rates.

As we near the end of this year’s Students for SHINE recognitions, we’re proud to celebrate the students of Santa Fe Pathways for their incredible commitment to serving others!

Together, 58 students completed an impressive 9,830 hours of community service through the Students for SHINE program.

10,698.35 hours of service. One incredible group of students!

This week Commissioner Maughan recognized Dove Science Academy students for their dedication to community service through the Students for SHINE program. Together, they contributed more than 10,600 volunteer hours to our community.

A special shoutout to Fatima Rangel-Villanueva, who completed an incredible 1,855.5 service hours!

84 ASTEC High School graduates, more than 10,000 hours of community service, and not even enough room on the stage for them all!

Commissioner Maughan was honored to recognize these incredible Students for SHINE graduates this week for their hard work and dedication to making our community a better place. With so many graduates being recognized, we had to take the photo from the audience because they simply could not all fit on stage, what an amazing problem to have!

The Students for SHINE graduates at Western Heights last night did over 6500 hours of volunteer service to the community. They were the first school to sign up for the program 15 years ago and have produced more graduates than any other school in the county for the SHINE program. We were honored to have Madison Bryant, the cousin of the late Safari McDoulett, join us on stage to present the cords. Safari created the Students for SHINE program and signed up Western Heights as our first participating school.

Here is the updated map of our 2026 SHINE Community Gardens! 🌿🍅🫑🥕🪏

The SHINE gardens are open to the public and designed to serve our community. Across the garden sites, a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables are grown, helping provide healthy, clean, and nutritious food to those who need it.

These gardens not only help feed families but also offer hands-on learning opportunities for students and give neighbors the chance to garden, learn, and grow alongside one another. By increasing access to fresh produce, the SHINE gardens support healthier lifestyles while strengthening community connections.

With spring on the way, we invite you to check out a SHINE garden near you and be part of something that helps our community

Our annual Oklahoma County Coat Drive begins today! ❄️🧥

Earlier this fall, we were proud to deliver over 1,600 coats to Christmas Connection from last year’s drive. Now we’re kicking off this year’s effort to help even more families stay warm this winter.

You can donate new or gently used coats of all sizes from Nov. 24–Dec. 29. Every coat goes directly to support local families through Christmas Connection’s holiday and year-round programs.

A truckload of warmth! Oklahoma County Commissioner Brian Maughan and SHINE participants delivered more than 1,600 coats collected during last year’s Oklahoma County Coat Drive to Christmas Connection this morning, marking the kickoff of this year’s effort.

The demand is high, and the need is urgent. From November 24 through December 29, we’ll be collecting coats for men, women, and children across Oklahoma County. Every coat makes a difference.

👉 Businesses: we’re seeking locations to host coat collection boxes. Help us spread warmth this holiday season! Message us here or email Commissioner Maughan at [email protected] if you'd like to get involved!
