Pivot - A Turning Point for Youth

Pivot - A Turning Point for Youth We provide wrap-around services to young people ages 12-24 in the Oklahoma City community. linktr.ee/PivotOkla

Pivot works with young people (12-24) who are often homeless or couch-homeless, disconnected or otherwise at-risk. Almost all are young people who face many barriers with limited resources to overcome those barriers on their own. Pivot provides programs and services that focus on youth services; counseling; educational and vocational services; prevention, intervention and diversion services; and

a young person’s overall well-being. Regardless of the circumstances from which young people come or the obstacles they face, Pivot believes they deserve access to educational and vocational opportunities, a stable and safe place to live, have their basic needs met and healthy permanent connections. Before joining the Individual Placement and Support (IPS) program through Pivot, J attempted to maintain employment at several different businesses. J entered the workforce with minimal natural supports while actively facing housing instability. He felt like his employment experiences were demanding and stressful, with employers giving little consideration to external factors, such as living in a shelter, that affected his performance.

With the support of Pivot, J transitioned into a Tiny Home and successfully graduated from the Pivot Preserves program, building his confidence and strengthening his employment skills. That’s when our IPS employment specialists stepped in. By building relationships with local businesses and working one-on-one with clients, our employment specialist found a job for J that aligned with his interests and experience.

Having an advocate with an established relationship with his employer proved crucial to J’s development as an employee. His supervisor collaborated with J’s employment specialist to address concerns with an understanding of his situation, allowing him to learn with grace while continuing to strengthen his skills. This approach was a game-changer for J, helping him build confidence and establish a stable routine.

By working directly with employers, our specialists support clients’ growth while maintaining a trauma-informed understanding of the challenges that can arise from housing instability.

Currently, J has maintained his job for over a year and is on track to graduate with his high school diploma this May. He stated, "I feel like IPS has supported me by helping me find a job and keeping it. IPS has helped me prepare for the future."

Pivot remains dedicated to strengthening our local workforce by providing advocacy, fostering connections with local businesses, and removing common barriers to employment that young people facing homelessness face.

We have much to be grateful for this !

- A huge shout-out to 8th Graders Will and Harper from Westminster, who raised over $1700 for Pivot! After learning about social issues currently affecting our community, these students selected Pivot as the beneficiary for their fundraiser. They worked together to make a pajama pants fundraiser, emphasizing the need for youth to have a safe place to sleep. We are so grateful for the support and so proud of everything they achieved with this project!

-A big thank you to Sundance Cares for their generous contribution to Pivot! We are so grateful for your continued support and investment in serving our local community.

Say hi 👋 to our May Employee of the Month, Janeal Jones! Janeal currently serves as the Director of our Transitional Living Program, and recently celebrated 10 years with Pivot!

Here is what our staff had to say about Janeal:

"Janeal’s favorite part of the job is making a connection with our clients and never passing on an opportunity to help them problem solve.”

"While TLP has been short staffed, Janeal has just stepped in and absorbed those responsibilities on top of her own duties, and you would never know it."

"Janeal’s leadership, reliability, and dedication keep TLP running smoothly."

Congratulations, Janeal! 🩵🎊
