Today, 52 cadets arrived at the Robert R. Lester Training Center to begin the Oklahoma Highway Patrol’s 76th Academy.

Over the next 22 weeks, these cadets will undergo intense training designed to prepare them for the challenges and responsibilities of serving the citizens of Oklahoma.

When they complete the academy, they’ll be equipped with the knowledge, skills, and dedication needed to begin their careers with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

We wish all 52 cadets the very best of luck as they begin this journey. Stay focused, stay committed, and stay safe. The road ahead starts now!

Please join us in honoring and remembering Trooper Johnnie Whittle #135 who was killed in the line of duty this day in 1953.

Trooper Johnnie Whittle joined the OHP in 1943.

On September 14, 1953, Trooper Whittle responded to a report from an Edmond man that he had given two men a ride to Oklahoma City, and that they were acting suspiciously. At approximately 9:10 a.m., Trooper Whittle found the pair and was transporting them to OHP headquarters. As Whittle turned into the Patrol driveway, one of the men pulled a pistol from a shoulder holster. As Trooper Whittle moved toward the man, the suspect fired one shot, striking Trooper Whittle, and a second shot which struck the second man in his right hand.

The murderer was arrested approximately two hours later three miles away as he was trying to hitchhike. He was sentenced to a sixty-five year prison sentence.

Several of our Troopers competed today at the American Grappling Federation tournament and had a great showing.

These guys spend a lot of time training outside of work, and today they got the chance to put that training to the test. Tough matches, some hardware brought home, and plenty of lessons to take back to the gym.

Proud of everyone who stepped on the mats and represented the Oklahoma Highway Patrol today. Great work, fellas!

Our Bomb Squad and Drone Unit took the opportunity this week to train together in a realistic scenario designed to strengthen teamwork and readiness.

In the exercise, a disgruntled employee arrived at a business threatening to detonate an explosive. The scenario required our troopers to respond to activity both inside and outside the building, as well as throughout the parking lot.

Working together, our teams practiced how to efficiently locate and safely remove explosives while coordinating resources and protecting those in the area.

Training like this helps ensure the Oklahoma Highway Patrol is prepared to respond to any call and any scenario that may arise in the real world.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is seeking witnesses and any available video footage related to a fatal vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision that occurred on September 10, 2026, on westbound I-44 near the river bridge by Elwood Avenue.

The collision occurred between approximately 7:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the collision - or who may have dash-camera footage, surveillance video, or other recordings from the area during that time - to contact the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

If you were in the area during this timeframe, please review any available footage and share relevant information with investigators.

Earlier this week, our recruiters had the opportunity to speak with the University of Oklahoma Wrestling Team about career opportunities with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and join them for a workout.

Athletes understand what it means to be part of a team, work toward a common goal, and constantly push themselves to improve. That mindset translates directly to the demands of being a trooper.

The discipline and competitive drive developed through athletics can make a difference in defensive tactics, fi****ms training, pursuit driving, and other critical skills. Preparation, repetition, and performing under pressure are part of both athletics and law enforcement.

OHP already has several former OU wrestlers serving as troopers. Their athletic careers may have ended, but the opportunity to be part of a team doesn’t have to.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol Conducts Criminal Interdiction Emphasis in Eastern Oklahoma

On September 3, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol conducted an extensive criminal interdiction emphasis in eastern Oklahoma. One traffic stop during the operation highlights the value of our partnership with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Troopers stopped a vehicle for multiple traffic and defective equipment violations. During the investigation, the trooper developed reason to believe the two occupants were unlawfully present in the United States and contacted ICE. Both men were subsequently taken into custody for immigration violations.

One of the men had previously been removed from the United States four times and had an extensive criminal history, including assault-family violence, burglary of a habitation, felony illegal entry, and felony re-entry of a removed alien.

This was one stop during a larger operation, but it demonstrates the type of individuals we are working to identify and remove from our communities. Our commitment is to the law-abiding citizens of Oklahoma, and we will continue working with our federal, state, and local partners to hold those who violate the law accountable and make Oklahoma safer.
