Yesterday, to commemorate Memorial Day, several of our officers teamed up with Meridian Township Fire Department, MSU Police and Public Safety, and the East Lansing Fire Department to take part in the Murph Challenge.

The Murph Challenge is a workout named in honor of Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2005. The workout has become a nationwide tradition on Memorial Day.

Each participant must run 2 miles, do 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, and 300 squats to complete the workout.

We are proud of our officers for completing the challenge! We would also like to thank Nitro Performance CrossFit and Coach Sam Schultz for organizing the event.

Please join us on Tuesday, May 26, at 6:00 pm for the first session of our Community Engagement Series! 🚓🚨

Similar to the Citizen’s Academy we have run in the past, this free program allows the public to come and learn about the criminal justice system and our role in the community.

The biggest difference between this series and our past Citizen’s Academy is that there is no commitment for these courses. We will post the sessions one at a time with a link to sign up. Registration is limited to the first 24 signups.

The first topic will cover de-escalation and will be hosted by Chief Rick Grillo. We will continue to hold sessions throughout the year and will provide future dates as they become available.

All sessions will be held on Tuesday evenings. Come to any or all of the sessions!

UPDATE (5/21/2026, 8:55 am)

Okemos Road is now open to traffic. Thank you for your patience.

Okemos Road Closure Update (5/15/2026)

To complete the work and reopen the railroad crossing ASAP, the crossing will also be closed to pedestrians. We recognize that closing the railroad crossing to pedestrians is not ideal, but the closure would need to remain in place much longer to maintain pedestrian access.

Efforts were made to schedule this work after the K-12 school year had concluded. For safety, CSX needs to replace portions of the rail on an emergency basis, and waiting until the K-12 school year ended wasn't feasible.

⚠️ Okemos Road Closure ⚠️

Beginning at 7:00 am on Tuesday, May 19, CSX will close their railroad crossing on Okemos Road between Mount Hope Road and Bennett Road for emergency repairs. This closure will be in place through Thursday, May 21.

The posted detour for northbound and southbound Okemos Road traffic will be Bennett Road, Hagadorn Road, and Mount Hope Road, as shown by the blue arrows on the map.

Okemos Road will remain open to local traffic between Mount Hope Road and Bennett Road; however, Okemos Road will have a hard closure at the CSX railroad crossing.

We appreciate your patience during this emergency closure and will provide updates as they become available.

– Meridian Township Police wants to remind residents that one of the best ways to reduce your chances of vehicle theft or a car break-in is to avoid becoming an easy target. Below are some simple ways to help protect yourself from becoming a victim:

• Hide Everything: Do not leave valuables visible inside your vehicle. Backpacks, purses, shopping bags, electronics, and even loose change can attract thieves.
• Use the Trunk Wisely: Place items in your trunk before arriving at your destination so potential thieves do not see you storing valuables.
• Lock Doors & Close Windows: Always lock your vehicle and fully close your windows, even if you are only stepping away for a few minutes. Many thieves simply check for unlocked doors.
• Take the Keys: Never leave spare keys, house keys, or garage door openers inside your vehicle.
• Remove Personal Documents: Avoid leaving registration papers, insurance cards, mail, or anything containing your personal address in your car.
• Light It Up: Park in well-lit, high-traffic areas whenever possible.
• Report Suspicious Activity: Contact local law enforcement if you notice individuals checking vehicle door handles or lingering suspiciously in parking lots.

A few extra seconds of prevention can help save you from becoming a victim.

We have heard many concerns regarding ‘E-Bikes’ in Meridian Township, specifically the behavior of the operators and safety concerns of the community. We have been contacting the operators of these vehicles and discussing the safety of their actions and taking enforcement when appropriate.

We would ask parents to have conversations with their children about bicycle, e-bike, and small electric vehicle safety, the importance of wearing helmets, and appropriate operation. Whether the operator is an adult or a juvenile we will continue to stop and talk to anyone that is creating a safety concern in the community.

There is confusion about what an e-bike is. E-bikes require pedals and have a motor to assist with propulsion. Electric vehicles without pedals could be defined as either an electric personal mobility device (small electric dirt bike, segway, scooter, etc) or a moped/motorcycle depending on the size of the electric motor. E-bikes, electric personal mobility devices, and moped/motorcycles all have different rules, but there is one constant. They all need to be operated safely.

May is Bicycle Safety Month, and it’s a great time to refresh your riding habits and stay safe on the road. Here are some essential bicycle safety tips:

• Always Wear a Helmet - Wearing a helmet helps protect your head in the event of a crash. Many injuries from car-bicycle accidents involve head trauma, which can often be prevented or reduced with proper protection.
• Follow the Rules of the Road - Bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as drivers. Obey traffic signals and stop signs, ride in the same direction as traffic, and use the rightmost lane whenever possible.
• Be Predictable - Make your movements clear to others on the road. Ride in a straight line, avoid weaving between parked cars, and use hand signals to indicate turns. Try to make eye contact with drivers, and never assume they will stop.
• Be Visible - Wear bright, neon, or fluorescent clothing to increase visibility. Whenever possible, ride during daylight hours. If riding at night or in low-light conditions, use reflective gear and proper front and rear lights.
• Avoid Distractions - Stay alert by keeping your focus on the road. Avoid using your phone or wearing headphones, as they can prevent you from hearing approaching vehicles and other important sounds.
• Maintain Your Bike - Before each ride, check that your tires are properly inflated, your chain is secure, and your brakes are functioning correctly.
• Refresh Your Skills - Whether you’re new to cycling or experienced, regular practice helps maintain your confidence and safety. Make sure you’re comfortable with braking, shifting gears, riding at different speeds, and handling various terrains.

⚠️ Road Closure (April 21, 4:30 pm) ⚠️

Beginning at 4:30 pm today, Kinawa Drive will be closed between Dobie Road and Jonquil Lane.

This closure will allow our contractor to repair the road after last week's water main break and should take approximately 2-3 hours to complete.

Dobie Road will remain open to both northbound and southbound traffic during the repairs. The traffic signal at Kinawa Drive and Dobie Road will operate in a flashing red mode; please treat this intersection as a four-way stop.

We appreciate your patience through this work!

UPDATE (3:30 pm)

All power has been restored, and traffic lights are now active at all three locations listed below.

Thank you to everyone for your patience, and thank you to the crews for working to restore power!

⚠️ Consumers Energy Outage (1/23 3:00 pm) ⚠️

We have been informed of a power outage near the Okemos Road/Grand River Avenue intersection. Consumers Energy is on scene working to restore power, with an estimated restoration time of 2-4 hours.

🚦 As a result of the outage, traffic signals are out at the following intersections: Grand River Avenue/Okemos Road, Marsh Road/Grand River Avenue, and Central Park Drive/Okemos Road. Please treat these intersections as four-way stops and proceed with caution. 🚦

If you are experiencing a power outage, we recommend running a small, steady stream of water in all sinks to help prevent your pipes from freezing.

To view the full outage area, visit the Consumers Energy outage map: https://www.consumersenergy.com/outagemap.
