On Saturday, February 8, 2025, at approximately 3:07pm, our dispatch center was notified of a missing youth snowmobiler in the Franklin County Whites Canyon area. Search and Rescue was called out and responded to begin searching for the missing snowmobiler. The search went on through the entire night. Franklin County Search and Rescue, and Franklin County Sheriff's Department coordinated their search efforts with Cache County Search and Rescue and Cache County Sheriff's Department.
A storm had moved through that area making search efforts more difficult and dropping approximately 10 to 12 inches of new snow. When the storm broke and the cloud cover moved out temperatures plummeted into the negatives. Weber County was contacted in the middle of the night and they responded with crews from the Weber County Search and Rescue and the Weber County Sheriff's Department. They arrived and deployed their personnel and resources at about 2 in the morning.
A helicopter from the Utah Department of Public Safety also arrived in the area and assisted with search efforts from the sky, flying, leaving to refuel, and then returning to fly some more. They also returned on Sunday morning as efforts to locate the missing snowmobiler continued. Search efforts continued throughout the entire night and into Sunday.
Members of Franklin County Emergency Management also responded to assist with communication needs and were able to effectively link Franklin County Dispatch with Cache County radio frequencies.
Box Elder County Search and Rescue deployed their people and resources on Sunday morning, aiding in the search. On Sunday morning, the missing snowmobiler was located. He was loaded up into a UTV and transported back to the command staging location, where medical support was waiting for him. The family requested he be transported to the hospital as a precaution, where he could be further evaluated and checked.
All responders on location were audibly and visually relieved when the radio traffic came across that he was located and was okay. We want to publically thank all the responders from all the various locations, agencies, and volunteers who came and helped. We had other organizations who were on standby to bring in fresh people when needed and other resources. We live in a wonderful area with people who are dedicated to helping others in their time of need. We are especially thankful that he was reunited with his family.
