Today, we remember the moral leader of our nation.

The information that is shared about MLK in mainstream spaces is far too often a cherry-picked version that overlooks large aspects of his life’s work. MLK fought for justice, both racial and economic. He knew that you cannot have one without the other. On this day and every day of the year, it is important that we remember all that he stood for.

A few weeks ago, we and Salt Lake Democratic Socialists of America joined our friends at Utah State YDSA for an event they organized with the Turtle Shelter Project to distribute life-saving winterized vests and other resources to our unsheltered brothers and sisters in the Ogden area.

We thank Utah State YDSA for organizing this event.

We would also like to take this opportunity to highlight the barbaric inadequacies of our current system.

Any system in which workers and college students have to use their spare time to make winterized vests to distribute to our unsheltered brothers and sisters so they don’t freeze to death in the winter, is cruel and broken. We should all feel immensely bothered when thinking about all the unsheltered people in our state and country that we were not able to get to.

We should feel more motivated than ever to push our government and institutions for and housing first style solutions instead of our current one. Our current system’s solution simply accepts homelessness, applies minimal effort to help the unsheltered, and crosses its fingers in hopes that students and workers spread their minimal resources to fundraise and help on the small scale. The same kind of neoliberal solutions which would rather that workers create gofundme pages for the sick, instead of transfer power from insurance company CEOs to insure every person in this country through Medicare for All.

Just like how we have the ability to insure every American, we also have the ability and resources to house every homeless person in this country. All it takes is for all of us to stand in solidarity and demand our government use its resources to help the most vulnerable members of our community rather than give trillions of dollars in tax breaks to the wealthy.

Let’s show that stands with the 46 million Americans who currently hold 1.6 trillion dollars in student debt.

Overall, it's going to be a really chill time where we all can chat about issues we all care about, and how to create structural change to improve the lives of our fellow students and working-class friends and neighbors.

We did it.

Unfortunately, we’re going to have to do it again, because the real work begins now.

If we want to create a government that works for everyone, we’re going to have to push Biden hard, because he won’t do it on his own.

Spring Semester Update:

As we are still trying to reach enough members to register as an official club at WSU, we are keeping our focus on what’s truly important, making real change and fighting for the immediate needs of workers and students.

This semester we are joining YDSA chapters at schools around the country in the national campaign to push President-elect Biden to cancel all student loan debt through executive order. Later down the line we would like to start future campaigns to address local issues such as homelessness and push for social housing. As we gain more members we will organize around issues that students find most important. So, if you have a specific issue in mind we would love to hear it and work to address it!

Since many of us have work and other obligations at Weber, we want to be respectful of everyone’s time. We are thinking of holding just one meeting a month where we can plan events and other optional volunteer opportunities for the current campaign we’re running. For our current campaign we are going to be holding weekly phone-banks to organize students in our push to cancel all student loan debt. Anyone is encouraged to attend.

Lastly, we are planning on holding a general interest meeting hopefully at the beginning of February once we get more sign ups. A link will be posted on this page with a set date and time.

In an effort to keep everyone safe and healthy we will be holding all events and meetings virtually through zoom until coronavirus vaccines are more widely available.
