Thank you to Tampa Bay News 10 for highlighting the very real concerns mosquito control districts across Florida are facing as property tax reform discussions continue.
Mosquito control is not simply a nuisance reduction service - it is essential public health protection and core community infrastructure that protects Florida’s residents, visitors, economy, tourism industry, emergency response capabilities, and overall quality of life.
Independent mosquito control districts provide critical infrastructure services that support:
• Disease prevention and public health protection
• Hurricane and post-disaster recovery operations
• Emergency response readiness
• Outdoor workforce productivity
• Tourism and economic stability
• Environmental management and community livability
Unlike many other local governments, independent mosquito control districts rely almost exclusively on ad valorem funding and do not have alternative statutory revenue mechanisms available to replace substantial revenue losses.
For more than 100 years, mosquito control professionals have helped make modern Florida possible through surveillance, aerial and ground treatment operations, emergency response, and year-round protection from mosquito-borne diseases such as West Nile virus, dengue, and eastern equine encephalitis.
As these conversations continue during the upcoming Special Session, we respectfully encourage policymakers to recognize mosquito control as a core public health and public safety service and as essential infrastructure necessary to sustain Florida communities.
“This isn’t just about mosquitoes - it’s about protecting Florida’s public health infrastructure, emergency preparedness, and quality of life.”
