We’ve received questions about the appearance of Lake Venita and wanted to share an update.

The City works closely with the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) to monitor and manage vegetation and algae growth at the lake. MDC Fisheries staff have been onsite multiple times this season and will continue treating areas as needed throughout the growing season to maintain fishing access and overall lake health.

Lake Venita is part of MDC's Community Assistance Program, and the lake is regularly monitored by fisheries biologists. MDC stocks channel catfish and other fish each year, utilizes grass carp to help control vegetation, and has also introduced aquatic plants that help manage algae growth naturally.

In addition, the City is moving forward with plans to install fountains at the lake, which MDC has confirmed can help improve water quality and reduce algae and vegetation growth. Before installation can occur, staff are working to verify that beaver activity in the area has been resolved.

While seasonal vegetation growth can affect its appearance, the lake remains under active management, and we will continue working with MDC to maintain it for residents and visitors to enjoy.
