🎣Fish on!
At the annual interagency get-together—Partners in Fishing—biologists, agency reps, and leaders from Ojibwe tribes, GLIFWC, State of Wisconsin, and Bureau of Indian Affairs converged on Lac Du Flambeau Band's Pokegama Lake this week. A blue bird day of fishing mixed with informal discussions on collaborative resource stewardship—namely for ogaawag, or walleyes.
As Lac du Flambeau Tribe continues ogaa conservation measures on and around their northern Wisconsin reservation, “Partners” targeted other species including bass, perch, and northern pike. Special guests from federal and state agencies—plus Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers and Green Bay Packers Superbowl Champions Robert Brooks, William Henderson, and Gilbert Brown—stressed continued teamwork between all governments to nurture ogaa populations.
GLIFWC, Ojibwe, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Department of Natural Resources fishery specialists collaborate to conduct walleye population assessments on more than 200 Ceded Territory lakes. All research data is freely shared and used to establish safe harvest numbers each year for state and tribal fishers.
