šŸ‘» Did you know that Ocracoke Library has a GHOST?!?! šŸ‘»
We sure do!
Introducing: Ghost, the Axolotl šŸ˜
She’s our new library pet! (She also has a guppy 🐠friend named Wavy Ocean!)
Ghost was given to the library by her former owners, Asher and Lily, and is a very popular with library patrons. She’s 3 years old and you can tell when she’s happy because her frills are really pink!
Stop by the library to see a real, live axolotl!
Watch the video in the comments to see how she eats..

Yesterday, we posted the American Library Association's READ poster featuring the late, great Dolly Parton, may she rest in peace.

Today, we're celebrating a young singer-songwriter, who is the ALA's honorary chair of National Library Card Sign-Up Month. Laufey posed for her own version of the READ poster with a copy of "Rebecca" by Daphne du Maurier (available at Ocracoke Library)!

Icelandic-Chinese composer, singer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Laufey joins the celebrity READ campaign and will serve as 2026 honorary chair of Library Card Sign-up Month this September. An enthusiastic reader, she founded the Laufey Book Club in 2022 helping to foster a global community of readers. Her first picture book, "Mei Mei The Bunny" is available now from Penguin Workshop, an imprint of Penguin Random House Children’s Books.

The youngest ever and two-time recipient of the GRAMMYĀ® Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album began her journey playing cello with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra as a teen before writing her first charting single while studying at Berklee College of Music. Laufey’s achievements have grown to include over 8 billion global streams, a social media audience of over 25 million, the largest jazz album debut in Spotify history, an album in Billboard’s Top 5, and honored as one of TIME’s Women of the Year in 2025.

Sad news today....

ALA is heartbroken at the passing of country music legend, cultural icon, and champion of literacy Dolly Parton.

Dolly’s award-winning Imagination Library initiative, inspired by her father’s inability to read or write, has put hundreds of millions of free books into the hands of children across America and was considered by her to be one of her greatest achievements.

ā€œWe’re giving books to kids who wouldn’t have a chance to get them otherwise,ā€ she told American Libraries in a 2018 interview. ā€œA lot of people think this is just for poor children—it’s for all children. It’s important to get books into the hands of any child that we can.ā€

ALA was proud to confer Dolly with an honorary lifetime membership, the Association’s highest honor, in 2023 for her lasting impact on librarianship, libraries, and the communities they serve.

Dolly was also part of ALA’s Celebrity READ campaign, in which she holds a copy of 'The Little Engine That Could.'

ā€œI’ve always related to that book because I’m the little engine that did!ā€ she said.

Thank you, Dolly. ā¤ļø
