Ocqueoc Bearinger Fire Department

Ocqueoc Bearinger Fire Department First responders for Ocqueoc and Bearinger Townships, and assisting throughout Presque Isle County.

The Ocqeoc-Bearinger Fire Department is a group of volunteers, proudly committed to serving the citizens and visitors of Ocqueoc and Bearinger Townships by providing fire and EMS first responder services to the community. In 1980, the Huron Beach Area Fire Department was established. Volunteers had been available previously to fight fires, but until 1980 there had not been an organized fire depart

ment. Through the efforts of The Huron Beach Civic Association, funds were procured and the department's first apparatus, a government surplus 1972 LaFrance fire truck, was purchased. The department has grown much, and has since been renamed the Ocqueoc Bearinger Fire Department. We are supported through donations and with tax monies from both Ocqueoc and Bearinger Townships. If you are interested in learning about becoming a member of the Ocqueoc-Bearinger Fire Department, please don't hesitate to contact us with a message or by leaving us a voice mail at 989-734-7568.

At the risk of being overly repetitive, until we get some rain we remain at high risk for fires. DNR restrictions on open burning remain in place for all of northern Michigan.

If you are able to enjoy this beautifully sunny weather while also wishing for rain, please do so.

Did you know, in your OBFD's two township service area, that there is just a single typical fire hydrant? That one fire hydrant is located at the U.S. Geological Survey's Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center in Ocqueoc Township, aka the sea lamprey control center.

We utilize instead what are called dry hydrants. These are PVC pipes with fire connection fittings, running into a lake, river, or pond, to which a truck or pump can be connected. We have several of these dry hydrants strategically located throughout our service area.

Our dry hydrant located at the Hammond Bay boat launch was damaged by the recent flooding and high current, which pulled the pipe that extends out into the river free from shore. Members of the department performed repairs on the hydrant yesterday evening to bring it back into service.

Please join all of us here at your OBFD in congratulating two of our newest members!

Firefighter trainee John Masson has successfully completed Medical First Responder (MFR) training. John has acquired his certification as a Medical First Responder, and is now an active member of our MFR response team. John will continue to participate in OBFD held firefighter trainings, and will be attending Firefighter I & II certification training at the first available opportunity, later this year.

Firefighter Mike Oconnor has successfully completed Firefighter I & II training. Mike has acquired his certification as a Firefighter, enabling him to participate in firefighter response. Mike will continue to expand his knowledge and expertise through OBFD held and in field training.

Both John and Mike have quickly proven to be valuable additions to the department, and we have great pride in them as we celebrate their accomplishments.
