Reference: Fatal Traffic Accident

On Sunday, October 04, 2026, at approximately 11:01 a.m., the Oconto County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Dispatch Center received a report of a motor vehicle versus UTV accident on Klaus Lake Road at the Nicolet Recreation Trail in the Town of Gillett.

Oconto County Sheriff’s Office deputies and emergency personnel responded to the scene, where they located a passenger car with significant front end damage and an overturned UTV in the roadway.

A preliminary investigation indicates the southbound passenger car, occupied by a 32-year-old male driver and a 31-year-old female passenger and infant passenger from Kaukauna, Wisconsin were traveling south on Klaus Lake Road. A UTV operated by a 59-year-old male from Mountain, Wisconsin was traveling south on the Recreational Trail when it entered the roadway turning north and was struck by the southbound passenger car and overturned. The occupants in the passenger car were transported to a hospital in Green Bay to be checked and treated for any injuries sustained in the accident. The operator of the UTV died at the scene as a result of injuries sustained in the accident.

The Oconto County Sheriff’s Office, in cooperation with the Wisconsin State Patrol and Brown County Medical Examiner’s Office, continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident. No additional information is being released at this time.

The Oconto County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Gillett Police Department, Town of Gillett Fire Department, City of Gillett Fire Department, Gillett Municipal Utility, Gillett Area Ambulance Service, Larry’s Towing and the Brown County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Hello, Fall! 🍁

The leaves are changing, the air is getting cool and crisp, and fall is officially arriving in Oconto County! As we welcome this beautiful season, it’s also a great time to keep a few important safety tips in mind:

🍂 Driving Safety
• Watch for wet leaves on roadways — they can be as slippery as ice.
• Be extra alert for deer, especially during dawn and dusk hours.
• With shorter days ahead, check that your headlights and taillights are working properly.

🔥 Home Safety
• Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
• Have your furnace and chimney inspected before the cold sets in.
• Use space heaters safely — keep them at least 3 feet from anything flammable and refrain from using gas heaters indoors.

🎃 Outdoor & Seasonal Safety
• Wear reflective gear while walking or biking in lower light.
