From the Commanding Officer and Family Advisor,
Friends and families of Headquarters and Support Battalion,
The Commandant of the Marine Corps released a message last fall emphasizing the importance of all four aspects of overall fitness - physical, spiritual, mental, and social. In his opinion, we are very good at addressing each of these except for spiritual fitness. He continues by stating that "research indicates that spiritual fitness plays a key role in resiliency, in our
ability to grow, develop, recover, heal, and adapt. Regardless of individual philosophy or beliefs, spiritual well-being makes us better warriors and people of character capable of making good choices on and off duty." Taking this to heart, we have spent a great deal of time in the battalion explaining that spiritual fitness is not necessarily about religion. Instead, we've expressed that spirituality is a belief system that allows a person to develop a sense of meaning and purpose in life. Although this if
often achieved through religion, it can also be about nature, art, music, family, or community.
That being said, the Battalion is sponsoring a "Spiritual Fitness Fair" on Thursday, 5 October 2017 at the Paige Athletic Fields with the intent of providing multiple avenues for obtaining this sense of meaning and purpose. The Fair begins at 1300 with lectures from psychologist Dr. Nikki Rodert, mixed martial arts champion and former Marine Chad Robichaux, and fitness
personality Amy Clover. Each of these guest speakers has a great message and differing perspective on spirituality. From 1500-1700 we will be offering seven different workshops for attendees to choose from dependent upon their interests. From 1700-1800 we will be serving free, traditional barbeque food while allowing the opportunity for attendees to browse the
over 20 information booths available from local religious groups, MCCS, special service providers, and more. Finally, the night will close with a free concert from the Grammy-award winning band "Switchfoot." Additionally, there will be several opportunity drawings throughout the day for things like a weekend getaway, Target gift cards, cash, and more. We will also have a kids' zone with jump houses and a rock wall, and free childcare is
available upon registration at https://sffchildcare.eventbrite.com. As the "Spiritual Fitness Fair" is mandatory for all Marines of the Battalion, friends, family, and children are more than welcome to attend any or all portions of the event. This is shaping up to be a great event, and we are looking forward to seeing you there! If you have any further questions about the event, ask your Marine or contact the FRO.
