Oceanside Harbor's channel dredging begins this month. Shoaling has narrowed the safe navigation depth for boaters since the Corps' last dredge in May, and this fall's operation will restore that depth while advancing new timing for beach sand replenishment.
The City, in coordination with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, expects Harbor channel dredging and beach sand placement to begin September 15 as part of a trial shift from the traditional spring dredging cycle to fall operations.
Approximately 380,000 cubic yards of sand are expected to be dredged from the Harbor channel, an amount that has accumulated since May 2026.
The sand removed will be placed on Oceanside beaches to support beach nourishment, coastal resilience, public access and recreation.
The fall schedule is expected to improve operational efficiency and take advantage of natural wave and sediment patterns that may help move placed sand southward to beaches that are experiencing significant erosion. Placing sand before the winter storm season may also provide a wider protective buffer for public infrastructure, recreational areas, and coastal property, something which is especially important in an El Nino year.
Sand bars are expected to develop from the sand placement operations, which will naturally direct waves to break further offshore and lessen the wave attack on coastal infrastructure, providing an added side benefit of more surf amenity.
Initial sand placement is anticipated to begin September 15, with mobilization beginning on September 12. The overall dredging and placement operation for fall 2026 is expected to conclude within approximately five to six weeks of the initial placement, depending on weather, ocean conditions and operational needs.
The 2026 operation will serve as a trial of the adjusted fall schedule. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is implementing the shift at no additional cost to the City, while retaining the option to return to the traditional spring dredging schedule if needed.
