This winter’s El Niño is shaping up to be one of the most impactful in decades. Higher sea levels, stronger storms, bigger waves, king tides, and increased flood risk are all converging— and many coastal areas are already seeing early signs of these impacts.

We sit down with experts from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the California Coastal Commission, and California State Parks to unpack:

• What El Niño actually is
• Why this year’s conditions are so unusual
• How inland and coastal communities may be affected
• What king tides mean for flooding and erosion
• Which areas are most vulnerable
• How to prepare and stay safe this winter

Whether you’re a coastal community member, boater, or simply curious about what’s ahead, this episode gives you the science, context, and practical steps to be ready.

Stay informed. Stay safe. Stay resilient.

“Watching youth catch their first wave, try volleyball and make new friends is why I created Culture Club South Bay. I want them to know they can be here too—that the beach is a place where they are welcome and belong. The Whale Tail® Grant helped us bring that experience to Hermosa Beach, alongside volunteers and partners who put so much love into these days.”
—Allison Hales, Founder & Executive Director, Culture Club South Bay

Culture Club South Bay (Culture Club South Bay) is growing its programs that connect youth with the ocean and Los Angeles County beaches, supported by a Whale Tail® Grant funded by the Ocean Protection Council (California Ocean Protection Council (OPC)). A recent expansion into Hermosa Beach featured a fall youth camp with two full days of surfing, beach volleyball, wellness activities, coastal education, and community connection. The new site launch was a success, bringing together 80 youth and 120 volunteers to build confidence and coastal recreation skills in a welcoming, culturally inclusive space. Special guests included pro youth surfer Maizy Gordon, the UCLA Women’s Beach Volleyball team and head coach Jenny Johnson Jordan, and the Coastal Commission’s own Commissioner Ray Jackson. A volunteer reflected: “Seeing a young girl go from sitting out on the sand refusing to touch the water to asking a coach to paddle her out on a surfboard shows how life-changing this space is.”

The destruction we are seeing across Southern California right now is heartbreaking. Our executive director, commissioners and senior staff are surveying the damage in real time and talking with elected officials and homeowners about next steps.

Yesterday, Coastal Commissioners and staff joined local leaders to assess the Orange County coast from the water. Today, they are in Long Beach documenting the extent of the flooding.

We will continue to work closely with the Governor’s office and local governments, with extreme flood conditions expected to persist throughout the weekend.

Our staff will be on call to provide information and facilitate emergency actions to limit the damage as much as possible. For anyone needing immediate assistance, please contact the Coastal Commission using this email address: [email protected].
