Your volunteers attended smoke-out training at the Monmouth County Fire Academy to practice operating in low-visibility conditions. During these sessions, they worked inside the academy’s 4,000-square-foot training building, which used generated smoke to simulate the interior of a structural fire. This environment required your volunteers to rely on their sense of touch, thermal imaging tools, and radio communication while navigating the layout and advancing hose lines in their full protective gear. Practicing in these controlled settings helped the crew maintain their technical skills and coordination for situations where visibility is limited.
In addition to basic navigation, these drills allowed your volunteers to practice standard search-and-rescue patterns and ventilation techniques. Instructors used moveable partitions to change the floor plans, ensuring the team focused on methodical search techniques rather than familiar layouts. These exercises also provided a practical way to monitor air management and equipment handling under physical exertion. By completing these smoke-out evolutions, your volunteers maintained the necessary readiness to handle structural calls and provide effective service to the community.
