A strengthening nor'easter is tracking up the East Coast, bringing dangerous coastal flooding, heavy rain, and wind gusts up to 50 mph from North Carolina to New England through the weekend. The Mid-Atlantic coast faces the most severe high-tide flooding, while coastal New England braces for heavy downpours and potential power outages. New York City and Boston residents should remain highly weather-aware as conditions peak Friday into Saturday. Please avoid coastal roads during high tides and anticipate significant travel delays at major Northeast airports.

This is why.

Saturday night, a large area of dune grass was burned after the use of fireworks on the beach. Dunes are much more than piles of sand—they are a natural barrier that helps protect Ocean City from coastal storms, flooding, erosion, and high winds. The dune grass holds the sand in place and helps preserve the dunes that protect our community, homes, businesses, and beaches.

One firework can undo years of environmental growth and restoration efforts in just a matter of minutes.

So yes, we will continue enforcing the law. We will continue confiscating illegal fireworks. And we will continue doing everything we can to protect the people, property, and natural resources that make Ocean City special.

For anyone that needs to hear this: please stay out of the dunes, especially if you’re planning to light off fireworks. Some fool did this in front of the fountainhead. About 3 areas torched. Foxes live there.
