Happy Juneteenth! Today, we celebrate the anniversary of the emancipation of enslaved people in the U.S. and the invaluable contributions Black Americans have made to our society.

On the lawn of the White House, where we should be setting an example for the nation, let us be clear: the hateful and degrading attacks directed at Michelle Obama was unacceptable.

Disagree on politics all you want. Debate policies. Argue elections. But reducing a respected former First Lady to cruel insults and bigoted smears is beneath the dignity of our country.

We do not strengthen America by demeaning people. We strengthen it by treating one another with respect, even when we disagree. There is no place for this kind of rhetoric in our public discourse, and it deserves condemnation from people of every political persuasion.
