July 1, 2016: **IGNITE YOUR POTENTIAL WITH MARION COUNTY FIRE RESCUE **

MCFR has relaunched it’s Firefighting Academy to fill 22 Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) positions. The concept: offer a firefighting and EMT certification program to non-certified individuals who have roots in Marion County. Program leaders hope this effort will enable MCFR to address the shortage of firefighters.

As part of the program, MCFR will pay the trainee’s fees, tuition and books for fire and EMT school. While trainees complete the six to seven-month certification requirements, they also earn a paycheck.

“Many people can’t afford to take off work for several months to attend the necessary training,” said MCFR Deputy Chief James Banta, who is leading the program. “This program gives everyday people an opportunity to earn a paycheck, complete the requirements and follow their dream. It also gives us well-trained future firefighters who see Marion County as their home and want to give back to their fellow citizens.”

Program qualifications:
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
- Must possess a valid Florida driver's license.
- Must be able to read and speak English.

Program disqualifiers:
- Driving: A poor driving record will classify a candidate as undesirable; however, it will not necessarily remove a candidate from consideration.
- Drug use: Marion County government is a drug-free work place. A pre-employment drug screen is conducted prior to hire approval.
- Employment: A poor employment history will classify a candidate as undesirable; however, it will not necessarily remove a candidate from consideration.
- Felony, criminal activity: A criminal history background investigation is conducted prior to hire, following Florida Statute 112.011 regarding felony convictions.
- To***co use: Applicants must have abstained from the use of to***co products for twelve months prior to applying and may not use to***co products during employment.
