Oberlin Underground Railroad Society - OURS

Oberlin Underground Railroad Society - OURS Our work focuses on rebuilding Oberlin's Black community. O.U.R.S is a grassroots collective of Oberlinians and friends of Oberlin.

We continue the spirit of the Underground Railroad as it has evolved from 19th century liberation to economic, cultural and community development in our town today. We are renovating the old Masonic Temple at the corner of South Pleasant and Vine Streets. This will become a community center featuring a comfortable place for discussion, a stage for artistic performance, a recording studio for oral

histories, and a full kitchen for community meals. We operate the one acre Oberlin Village Garden at the bottom of Spring Street. Here we hire young people who learn to grow crops and to market them in the community. Organic food is available for delivery, as well as a weekly farm stand at the hall. Thus we are developing young entrepreneurs who will contribute to the growth of the neighborhood economy.
