Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a reminder that every older adult deserves to live with dignity, respect, and safety.

Elder abuse can take many forms, including financial exploitation, neglect, physical abuse, and emotional abuse. Unfortunately, far too many seniors become victims of scams, fraud, and mistreatment each year.

I encourage everyone to check in on the older adults in their lives, stay alert to warning signs, and speak up if something doesn't seem right. Protecting our seniors is a shared community responsibility.

If you believe an older adult is in immediate danger, call 911. Together, we can help ensure our seniors remain safe, respected, and protected.

The Oakwood Hills Police Department is actively investigating reports of individuals engaging in late-night doorbell ringing, trespassing, disorderly conduct, and property damage in the neighborhood last night.

These incidents are being investigated as criminal offenses due to the reported property damage and acts of trespassing.

If you witnessed any suspicious activity, have information that may assist investigators, discovered damage to your property, or have video footage from a doorbell camera or other security system, please call 911 and request to speak with a police officer.

Even information that may seem minor can be valuable. Video footage, observations, and small details often help establish a timeline of events and identify those responsible.

We appreciate the cooperation of our residents and thank the community for its assistance in maintaining the safety and security of Oakwood Hills.

OAKWOOD HILLS MAN ACCUSED OF RUNNING OVER WOMAN WITH CAR ORDERED DETAINED PENDING TRIAL

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
McHenry County State’s Attorney Randi Freese announced today that the Honorable Judge Jeffrey Hirsch granted the State’s petition to deny pretrial release for Pablo Contreras, 50, of Oakwood Hills, Illinois. Contreras appeared in Initial Appearance Court on May 23, 2026, charged with Aggravated Domestic Battery Causing Great Bodily Harm, Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon, and Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Injury.

Evidence presented in court established that on the evening of May 22, 2026, Contreras was involved in an argument with a female family member outside a residence in Oakwood Hills. A neighbor who witnessed the incident observed Contreras enter the driver’s seat of his 2020 Volkswagen while the victim stood behind the vehicle. Contreras allegedly reversed the vehicle, striking and running over the woman before fleeing the scene and leaving the victim critically injured. Emergency responders transported the victim to a nearby hospital for treatment. Contreras later returned to the scene after the victim had already been taken for medical care.

State’s Attorney Freese condemned the violent nature of the offense, stating, “This was a horrifying act that left a woman with critical injuries. Our office remains committed to aggressively prosecuting violent offenders and standing alongside victims of domestic violence.”

Contreras is scheduled to appear in court again on June 2, 2026.

This matter remains under investigation. Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact the Oakwood Hills Police Department at (815) 444-9456.

Members of the public are reminded that a criminal complaint contains only charges and is not proof of guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and entitled to a fair trial, during which the State must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

As we approach Memorial Day weekend, I encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of this important holiday. Memorial Day is dedicated to honoring the men and women of our military who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country.

While holidays such as Veterans Day and Armed Forces Day recognize and celebrate those who have served and continue to serve in the United States Armed Forces, Memorial Day is a solemn remembrance of those who never made it home.

Their courage, sacrifice, and devotion to our nation will never be forgotten.

On behalf of the Police Department, we extend our gratitude to all military members, veterans, and especially the families of our fallen heroes. As you gather with family and friends this weekend, please remember the reason for the holiday and keep safety in mind while traveling.

We wish everyone a safe and meaningful Memorial Day weekend.

5 Ways to Protect Your Vehicle Against Break-Ins

As warmer weather returns, we often see an increase in vehicle thefts, burglaries, and “smash-and-grab” incidents. Nearby communities have recently experienced an uptick in these crimes.

Most vehicle break-ins are crimes of opportunity. Taking a few simple precautions can help reduce your risk and deter thieves. Please report any suspicious activity or individuals to the police immediately.

Common Items Stolen From Vehicles
• Cell phones
• Laptops
• Cash and credit cards
• GPS devices
• Radios and speakers
• Vehicle documents and license plates
• Sunglasses, tools, and other valuables

Protect Your Vehicle By:
1. Locking doors and windows -
Always lock your vehicle and close all windows, even if you will only be away briefly.
2. Hiding valuables -
Keep valuables out of sight or secure them in the trunk. Whenever possible, take them with you.
3. Removing personal information -
Do not leave sensitive documents or unnecessary personal information in your vehicle.
4. Parking in well-lit areas -
Park in busy, visible locations and avoid isolated areas or places hidden by large vehicles, fences, or dumpsters.
5. Using alarms or security devices -
Vehicle alarms, steering wheel locks, and other anti-theft devices can help deter criminals.

Simple precautions can go a long way in preventing theft and protecting your property.
