Cottonwood Hollow Farm

Cottonwood Hollow Farm Eco-Agriculture Cottonwood Hollow Farm is tucked into the hollow of two streams in the Garrard Creek valley basin. Happy to have visitors, by appointment.

Here you will find Black Welsh Mountain Sheep and Bluefaced Leicester Sheep grazing the fields, moved from place to place by our Border Collies. A few American Curly Horses can be seen grazing the fields and a varied flock of poultry too. We are a small, three generations family farm, proving lamb, fleece, and breeding stock sheep.

What an incredible week here on the farm and away! Young guests, team sheep move, a new lamb, bringing in hay, seeing just how much my boys can actually help with all of this, starting Ruth & Ren on sheep (thanks Corinne & Fido’s!), and a bunch of other cool, fun goings on. I’m feeling accomplished!!!

Last dog walk of the day and watering of the garden. Feeling so fortunate to be here, to be alive, to be able to tend so much life, and to be tended in return. Amazing planet, World, We all get to be part of. Much to ponder, the silver linings, the hard but necessary choices, the directions of our lives, and how we want to be spending the very few seconds any of us ever has in life. How do we wish to be treated? How do we wish for others to be treated? What can we do to make it so? I choose loving kindness, equitable energetic exchange, tending to and by life. You?

Rebecca had her lamb last night, our farm’s first lamb of the year (we bred late due to some major fencing projects taking place late last year prohibiting effective containment of that many separate groups). Mom and baby are doing well although Reba was born “off”, we will see how she progresses, at the moment we are hopeful and thankful for her presence. Shout out to Bianca, who handled herself exemplary with the entire birthing process. Gave space and watched over the area, checked in with Rebecca and her lamb, with us, and then came away to continue her guard duties. She’s just two and just wonderful in every way. 🤗🥰

It’s funny the things that can seem so ordinary, but leave you feeling accomplished, at peace, like you’re “doing the thing”, for some teason loading our young ewes onto the trailer in the middle of the field, no guides, just me and my good dog, felt like such a moment today. I usually just let the mob run amok and send Jac to collect them back again when I’m ready. But the grass is very tall in places and night was fast approaching, so I figured ‘well, why not just keep them contained?’ Worked really well. Good exercise. Way to go Jac!!
PS Yes we’ve done all kinds of things like this, tonight just had that something extra special, flow, quality to it, just all the participants in sync together; a “like magic, only better, real life” moment.

So excited!! We got our compost, from the last two years, spread out on our road realignment heavy equipment compacted and now in serious rehabilitation care field!! We were able to rent the manure spreader from our local Conservation District, Grays Harbor Conservation District!! Feels great to have been able to help our field out, be intentional about nutrient management, and all in sync with the weather and our soil’s optimum time for uptake. Reseeding and discing next.
If you’re looking for help with your land, be it technical, financial, needed tools, help devising a farm plan, help restoring your land, get a hold of your local (nonregulatory in WA state) Conservation District and see what they can do to help you conserve your natural resources, air, water, soil, not only helping to keep your working lands working, but even more optimally, regeneratively.

Further, ever so thankful to my father in law for doing most of the tractor work while I ran around working on a plethora of other field prep work (taking down temporary fencing from the winter, pulling thistle, wrangling children, etc) and for continuing to mentor Torleif with his tractor operation skills. Feeling like we all got a lot done this last couple of days, go team Smith!! 🥳

I’ve been sick the last couple of weeks, recovering from pneumonia still, but finally well enough to get the last two (of four) sheep groups out to pasture. Jac (my Border Collie) and Zak (my husband) helped make it all go pretty darn well. Got to visit with the mares for a bit too, always a pleasure. 🤗🥰
