We mourn the tragic losses of Tamara and Betty. 🤍🕊️

On March 26, 2026, CCWP and the Policy Advocacy Clinic at UC Berkeley Law issued a comprehensive report—”No Time to Wait”—on the dire living conditions and need for release of the 740 elders in CA’s two women’s prisons, Central California Women’s Facility in Chowchilla and the California Institution for Women in Corona.

We have since had two additional, unnecessary deaths of women incarcerated at CIW: Tamara Hinkle (age 49), who served over 30 years on a Life Without Parole sentence; and Elizabeth “Betty” Broderick (age 78), who served over 22 years.

This loss of life is preventable. We must strengthen and expand release pathways for people in women’s prisons, including via Elderly Parole. Contact your legislators today and urge them to protect this vital program.

It’s been a year since we secured a historic legal victory over the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) with the leadership and organizing of courageous FCI Dublin survivors. For the first time in BOP history, a Consent Decree was put in place to ensure unprecedented oversight and enforceable protections for hundreds of people incarcerated in federal women’s prisons.

We’ve won a lot. We’ve struggled a lot. We’ve learned a lot. We continue to fight alongside people inside, to free survivors, and to block the potential reopening of the facility for ICE.

Join us Thursday 5/28 to learn more!

Space is limited! RSVP today using link in bio. 🌺

This event will host an art exhibit of the memorial quilts that honor survivors of forced sterilization inside the women’s prisons, share out the “Know Your Reproductive Rights in Prison” resource guide, and a panel discussion with formerly incarcerated people and advocates tackling reproductive injustice in women’s facilities. Our aim for this event is to not only center the experiences of incarcerated people, but uplift current legislative efforts that work to address ongoing harms of incarceration.

Light refreshments will be provided.
