TONIGHT: OUSD AT THE TABLE

Join the BWOPA Oakland/Berkeley Chapter tonight for a conversation about the leadership and issues shaping the Oakland Unified School District.

We’re pleased to welcome OUSD Superintendent Dr. Denise Saddler for opening remarks and Dr. Kimberly Mayfield Lynch, BWOPA California Education Policy Chair, as moderator.

Tonight’s conversation will center OUSD Board Districts 2, 4 and 6. We’ll begin each district conversation by hearing directly from a parent from that district, followed by current Board members and candidates sharing their priorities.

And we want to hear from you. Bring your questions. Attendees will be invited to submit questions during the moderated Q&A for each district.

When communities come together, meaningful conversations become possible.

Last week, BWOPA Oakland/Berkeley Chapter and the Oakland African American Chamber PAC proudly co-hosted A Voice for the People, bringing together community members, elected officials, justice-impacted leaders, and advocates for an honest conversation about justice reform, accountability, public safety, and the future of our communities.

Moderated by Congresswoman Lateefah Simon, the discussion featured San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins, Dante Jones, and Vincent O'Bannon, whose lived experiences and perspectives challenged us to think more deeply about what justice requires.

Throughout the evening, audience members asked thoughtful questions, panelists shared candid reflections, and our community demonstrated that we can engage difficult topics with honesty, respect, and a commitment to learning from one another.

For nearly six decades, Black Women Organized for Political Action has believed that democracy is strengthened when communities have direct access to the leaders who serve them. While we may not always agree, we remain committed to creating spaces where dialogue, accountability, and civic engagement can thrive.

Thank you to everyone who attended, volunteered, partnered with us, and contributed to making this evening a success. Special thanks to our co-host, the Oakland African American Chamber PAC, and to everyone who helped bring this important conversation to life.

The conversation continues.

Congratulations to Our Own, Felecia Favroth!

BWOPA Oakland/Berkeley is proud to celebrate Executive Member-at-Large and Membership Co-Chair Felecia Favroth on her appointment to the City of Oakland's Landmarks Preservation Advisory Board. The Oakland City Council recently confirmed Mayor Barbara Lee's appointment of Felecia to serve a three-year term representing the Board's Real Estate Broker position.

Felecia brings a wealth of experience as a real estate broker, entrepreneur, preservation advocate, and nonprofit leader. Her longstanding commitment to protecting Oakland's architectural, cultural, and historic resources, combined with her passion for community stewardship, makes her an outstanding addition to the Board.

As Felecia so beautifully shared:

"Historic places are about more than buildings—they're about people. We need to save our assets, preserve our stories, and ensure our community is part of protecting what we built."

That belief reflects the heart of historic preservation: honoring the people, stories, and communities that shaped Oakland while ensuring their legacy is preserved for future generations.

We are incredibly proud to have Felecia serving in leadership within our chapter and now in this important role for the City of Oakland. Congratulations, Felecia! Thank you for your continued service, leadership, and unwavering commitment to preserving Oakland's rich history.

💙🧡 Congratulations from your BWOPA Oakland/Berkeley family!
