Turkey Fire Update: Forward progress has been stopped, all evacuation orders have been lifted, and Camanche South Shore is open and operating normally.
The fire burned approximately 46 acres, and firefighters made significant gains on containment overnight thanks to the rapid response of CAL FIRE, local fire agencies, law enforcement, dispatchers, and other first responders.
This fire also highlights the importance of proactive wildfire prevention. Just one week before the Turkey Fire, EBMUD Rangers partnered with CAL FIRE to conduct a prescribed burn in the area. These carefully planned burns help reduce dry grasses, brush, and other ground fuels that can allow wildfires to spread quickly and intensely.
While many factors influence fire behavior, reducing available fuel can help firefighters slow a fire’s spread, establish containment lines, and better protect nearby communities, recreation areas, and watershed resources.
Wildfire resilience starts long before smoke is in the air. It starts with preparation.
Thank you to all of the firefighters and emergency personnel who worked through the night to protect our communities and watershed.
