Recovery is daily work. It's appointments, groups, hard conversations, and starting over on the days that go sideways.

Our services are built to hold all of it, including the road back to your children. One place, one team, so a woman rebuilding her life isn't chasing five agencies to do it.

Some days the progress is obvious. Most days it's quiet. Both count.

Happy Labor Day from all of us at Serenity House Oakland.

The day is about work, and most of the conversation goes to people who already have it. We think about the other side of that. The women rebuilding after a gap, after treatment, after raising kids alone, after a life that made a steady job impossible for a while.

That's the work we do together through Serenity Wellness & Business. The next cohort starts early 2027, and the interest form is in our bio. If you're thinking about it, put your name down. There's no commitment, and we'll reach out when enrollment opens.

A quick look at the work behind the work. 👀

Most of what our team does never makes it to a feed. The setup, the breakdown, the hours that go into making one afternoon run smoothly for the women who walk through our doors.

It's ordinary work. Everything else depends on it.

Supporting a nonprofit means funding this part too. If you want to be part of it, the donation link is in our bio.

Today we pause to honor Gloria Steinem (1934–2026), a writer and advocate whose decades of work helped open doors for women everywhere. Her belief that every woman deserves the freedom to shape her own life is at the heart of what we do here at Serenity House Oakland.

Every day, the women we serve are rebuilding — reclaiming their voice, their independence, and their future after domestic violence, incarceration, and addiction. That kind of journey takes courage, community, and people who believe in second chances.

Gloria’s life reminds us that progress for women isn’t given — it’s built, one story, one act of belief at a time. We’re proud to carry that spirit forward.

If her legacy moves you, consider supporting the women writing their next chapter with us. Every donation helps. 🔗 Link in bio to give.

Rest well, Gloria. Thank you for the doors you opened. 🦋

Haley Boswell brought us a whole collection of toys and we are so grateful. 💗

These are going home with kids in our community whose moms are deep in the work of building something more stable. That work is hard and it takes time. In the middle of it, these kids get to play, make stuff up, and just be kids.

Thank you, Haley. And thank you to everyone who keeps our families in mind like this.

There's an assumption that abuse happens in a certain kind of house, in a certain kind of neighborhood, to a certain kind of woman.

It doesn't. It crosses income brackets, degrees and zip codes. Women with money get abused. Women with careers get abused. What doesn't cross evenly is everything that comes after.

A woman with resources can pay the attorney, cover the deposit, move her kids into a new school without losing a month. A woman without them is doing the exact same work with none of the same tools. Same courage, harder road.

That gap is the part we can actually do something about. Everyone who comes through our door gets the same, no matter what she arrived with.

-----

New unit of measurement: Serenity years 😜

Some of them have been at this a while.

There's a law in California called "failure to protect." What it means in practice: a mother being abused can lose custody because of what somebody else did to her.

Look at the scale. In LA County, October 2020, there were about 38,600 open child welfare cases. More than half of them, 51.6%, involved allegations of domestic violence.

Here's what usually happens next. The kids go. Then she gets a list to complete before she can get them back. Stable housing. Parenting classes. Counseling. Income. Every item on that list is support that would have held the family together if it had arrived first.

By the time most women find us, that's already happened. She's holding the list and she's supposed to work through it alone, without an address, without her kids, on somebody else's clock.

So we take the list seriously. Housing, so she has an address to put on the paperwork. Recovery support and case management, so the progress she's making is documented. A safe room for visits, so seeing her children doesn't depend on finding somewhere to do it.

She does the work. We make sure the work is possible.
