Last night, we had the joy of joining our partners at St. Mark’s AME Zion Church for a climate justice themed open mic at the Cooley Landing Education Center in East Palo Alto.

The evening brought together community members, artists, organizers, and people of faith to share stories, poetry, music, and reflections on the challenges and possibilities of building a more just and sustainable future. The event was co-sponsored by the Climate Resilient Communities, whose work continues to strengthen local leadership and resilience in communities on the frontlines of climate change.

Gatherings like these remind us that climate justice is about more than policy and technology. It is about people, relationships, culture, and collective hope. Through song, storytelling, and shared vision, we create spaces where communities can imagine a different future and build the power needed to make it real.

This is sacred work. It is the work of nurturing beloved community, honoring the wisdom of those most impacted, and transforming fear into solidarity and action. In a time of ecological crisis and deep inequality, coming together to listen, create, and organize is itself an act of resilience and faith. We are grateful to everyone who shared their gifts and helped make the evening such a powerful expression of community, justice, and hope.

Community Choice Aggregators (CCAs) are proof that we do not have to accept the fossil fuel driven, profit obsessed utility model as inevitable. Programs like Ava Community Energy in the East Bay are building cleaner, more democratic energy systems rooted in public accountability and community resilience.

CCAs allow communities to pool their buying power and invest in renewable energy, battery storage, resilience hubs, energy efficiency, and local clean energy jobs. Ava’s resilience hub initiative is helping community spaces prepare for blackouts and climate disasters with solar and battery storage systems that can keep critical services running during emergencies.

This is what a just transition can look like: clean power, local control, and energy systems designed around human need instead of shareholder profit. It is not perfect, and there are real debates about implementation, affordability, and enrollment practices, but CCAs open space for communities to fight for something better than monopoly utilities and climate collapse.

Energy should be a public good. CCAs are one step toward making that real.

Every June 5, the United Nations brings together governments, communities, and individuals across more than 150 countries to address our planet's most pressing environmental challenges.

This year's theme is "Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future," a call to listen to the urgent signals Earth is sending and decide what signals we choose to send back. At California Interfaith Power & Light, we know that faith communities have always had an answer to that call.

From the Islamic principle of khalifa (stewardship of creation) to the Jewish imperative of tikkun olam, from Indigenous teachings of reciprocity to the Christian call to love our neighbor, our traditions have long known what science now urgently confirms: Earth is sacred, and we are called to protect it. 🌿
