Tomorrow, Friday, June 19, OUSD schools will be closed in observance of Juneteenth.
Juneteenth honors June 19, 1865, when freedom was finally announced to more than 250,000 enslaved Black Americans in Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
This year, OUSD’s Juneteenth message honors Oakland’s powerful legacy of Black freedom, organizing, and community, from West Oakland’s Pullman porters and the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters to C.L. Dellums, Seventh Street, and the Black students, families, educators, and community members who continue to carry that legacy forward today.
We invite you to read the full message on our website, watch KDOL’s video from this year’s Oscar Wright Celebration of African American Excellence, and explore resources to learn more about Juneteenth and Oakland’s Black history.
Happy Juneteenth, OUSD.
