🚜🌿 Mow Smart. Work Smart. Prevent Wildfires. 🔥

As temperatures rise and vegetation dries out, it's important to complete mowing, w**d trimming, and other vegetation management activities before 10 a.m. when conditions are cooler and humidity is higher.

When using lawn mowers, w**d trimmers, chainsaws, or other power tools:

✅ Start early - Finish before 10 a.m.
✅ Avoid operating equipment on hot, dry, or windy days
✅ Keep equipment well-maintained and equipped with spark arresters when required
✅ Clear the area of rocks and metal objects that could create sparks
✅ Have a shovel and water source or fire extinguisher nearby

A single spark can start a wildfire.

By taking a few precautions, you can help protect your home, community, and our landscapes.

One Less Spark = One Less Wildfire.

Meet Tanya Meyers, the Wildfire County Coordinator for Yolo County 👋

Since 2021, , powered by a partnership between and CAL FIRE, have been increasing community wildfire resilience by planning and advancing prevention, preparedness, mitigation, and recovery projects.

For Tanya, access to CAL FIRE outreach materials and ongoing collaboration has been foundational to building wildfire preparedness in her community.
From distributing Ready for Wildfire materials at local events to sharing defensible space and home hardening resources, these tools have helped make wildfire safety information more accessible and actionable for residents 🔥🔥

That partnership has also extended into long-term planning. Through the Wildfire County Coordinator program, Tanya worked closely with CAL FIRE to help develop Yolo County’s first Community Wildfire Protection Plan—bringing together a local steering committee and maintaining strong, ongoing communication with CAL FIRE staff.

The pie chart breaks down the causes of wildfires across our Unit between 2021-25.

The largest causes are the result of equipment use, arson, debris and open burning and other causes (i.e. unknown, fireworks, structure fires into the vegetation, other fires, miscellaneous causes).

Most ignitions are associated with roads and areas of high population density. As we continue , take a moment to consider your role in preventing the next spark.

Check out this multi-benefit project the RCD has been working on in Winters, CA! The RCD and a crew from the California Conservation Corps are working along Dry Creek in Winters, CA to remove Arundo donax and to create a shaded fuel break.

Dry Creek is a tributary of Putah Creek and borders the westside of Winters, CA. The Dry Creek Fuels Reduction project is included in the Yolo County Community Wildfire Protection Plan to protect the community of Winters from wind-blown embers and wildfire. The objective of the project is to reduce flammable fuels along Dry Creek by limbing and trimming Arundo and other vegetation to implement a shaded fuel break. Hand crews are using chainsaws, loppers, and hedge trimmers to cut vegetation and are dragging fuels to a chipper.

Arundo donax is an invasive w**d that has invaded creeks and sloughs in Yolo County. Arundo degrades habitat by displacing native vegetation while serving little to no habitat function. Arundo can grow up to 4 inches per day creating massive amounts of dry biomass that is more flammable than native plants. Because of its height and sprawl, it moves fire into the canopies of surrounding trees, creating more dangerous fire conditions. Removing Arundo creates more favorable conditions for native plants which provide food, shelter, and nectar sources for native wildlife and insects!

By removing Arundo and creating more vertical and horizontal spacing between remaining vegetation along Dry Creek, nearby homes and the City of Winters are more fire resilient!

Tomorrow, Saturday, May 2 is Wildfire Preparedness Day! Are you ready for wildfire? Now is the time to get ready by preparing your defensible space.

Start with Zone 0, the most critical part of your defensible space! Zone 0 is the 0–5 feet immediately surrounding your home, where the risk of ignition is highest due to embers. Keeping the first five feet clear of combustible materials that could ignite from embers and spread to your home.

Clear out dry leaves, pine needles, and debris from roofs, gutters, and along the foundation. Remove combustible items like mulch, firewood, patio furniture cushions, and doormats made of natural fibers. Choose hardscaping like gravel, rock and pavers instead of mulch or landscaping. In this zone, keep plants minimal, well-spaced, and properly maintained. Consider using movable planter boxes instead of planting into the ground so plants can be moved out of Zone 0 during fire season or before evacuation.

Zone 0 is your home’s buffer. A clean, ignition-resistant perimeter helps prevent flames from reaching your structure and gives firefighters a safer space to defend your property.

Last Friday, March 27, the Chipper Crew from the Yolo County Flood Control and Water Conservation District visited four properties in the Capay Valley and West Winters area to chip vegetation piles from defensible space projects.

Creating defensible space around your home is one of the most effective ways to protect your property and your neighborhood from wildfire. Clearing dry brush, trimming trees, and removing flammable vegetation and ladder fuels, reduces the risk of fire spreading to your home.

Need help managing vegetation piles from defensible space work? Our next Chipper Day is tentatively scheduled for April 10!

To sign up, review our guidelines and fill out the Chipper Request form at: yolofiresafe.org/chipper-program.
