🍎 Happy D2 Affordability Friday 

Food costs continue to be a challenge for many families, seniors, and students across Alameda County. Fortunately, there are food assistance programs and community resources available to help. 

If you have been impacted by recent CalFresh cuts or are looking for alternative food resources, Alameda County Community Food Bank and other community-based organizations can help connect you to food distributions and other nutrition assistance programs.  

Here in District 2, community organizations, volunteers, and local partners work every week to support families, seniors, and students facing rising food costs. 

Please note that food distribution sites and programs may have different schedules and operating hours. Availability is subject to change, so we encourage residents to contact organizations directly for the most up-to-date information.

There are many ways to support food access in our community: 

- Volunteer at a local food distribution site 
- Donate to community food programs 
- Support organizations working to address food insecurity 

Thank you to every volunteer, nonprofit, and community partner helping ensure District 2 residents have access to the resources they need. Together, we can help make District 2 and Alameda County a more affordable and food-secure community for everyone.

May is CalFresh Awareness month. Food security is an essential priority for every household. CalFresh provides monthly food benefits that help make everyday groceries more affordable.

The offices are open Monday through Friday between 08:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. with the exception of county holidays. We will leave links to both of these resources in our Linktree.

My sincere condolences to the Gacoscos family, friends, community and everyone who was fortunate to know Pat Gacoscos. She will always be a cherish and loved community leader. I’m thankful for her friendship, guidance, and her steady leadership. She showed us the importance of community service, celebrating our diversity, and building bridges. Union City, and surrounding communities are better because of her. I’m thankful I had the chance to tell you in person (a few weeks ago), that I love you and am thankful for you. May she rest in peace, until we meet again my friend. 💜

At the Alameda County Together (ACT) for All Ad-Hoc Committee Meeting on April 30th, we took an important step forward in the formation of an Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs. This much needed Office will help create a more coordinated and accessible system that connects immigrant and refugee families to trusted legal support, community resources, and County services.

In Alameda County, one in three residents are foreign-born. In District 2, that number is nearly 46 percent. As the daughter of Mexican immigrants, this work is deeply personal to me. Every family deserves to feel safe, informed, and supported when interacting with their government.

Over the past year, we have worked alongside community organizations, advocates, philanthropy partners, and County leadership to move this effort forward through new investments, protections, and community-centered policies.

The need is urgent, and our communities deserve action. We are not here to sit on recommendations. We are here to implement them and build a stronger, more responsive County for all.

Alameda County is making meaningful progress in addressing homelessness. Today’s Point in Time Count update showed a 13% reduction in homelessness countywide. This is such an encouraging sign that our collective efforts are making a difference.

Our system helped to house 4,445 people, a 23% increase from the year before. Additionally, more than one-third of people counted in this year’s PIT Count were sheltered, the highest proportion since 2015. Through Measure W and our Home Together Plan, Alameda County is investing over $100 million this year to expand homelessness prevention, shelter, outreach, and permanent housing across our communities.

There is still more work ahead, but today’s update is a reminder that when cities, the County, service providers, and community partners work together, progress is possible.
