I have reviewed the remarks made during the public portion of Thursday night's Township Council meeting and I want to be absolutely clear: antisemitism has no place in our community.
The Council listened live to what is in hindsight clearly a very antisemitic individual from out of town spewing hatred. In that moment, none of the Council members understood the vial message he was sharing. The use of coded language to target or demean Jewish people is unacceptable. The remarks delivered at the meeting crossed that line. Whether expressed directly or through coded references, hatred directed at Jews is antisemitism, and I unequivocally condemn it.
The Township of Ocean is home to residents of many faiths, backgrounds and traditions. Every resident deserves to feel safe, respected, and welcomed in our community. No one should be singled out, stereotyped, or attacked because of their religion or identity.
Our public meetings exist to encourage civic participation and respectful dialogue. They must never become a platform for bigotry, prejudice, or efforts to divide our neighbors against one another.
I stand with our Jewish residents and with all residents of Ocean Township who reject hatred and discrimination in any form. The Township of Ocean remains committed to fostering a community where every person is treated with dignity, respect, and equal regard.
