On August 27, at approximately 5:00 p.m., Oakdale Police officers responded to the 700 block of Wakefield Court following multiple reports of gunfire in the area. A caller reported that bullets were traveling toward their location, and that several rounds had struck the building where they were working. One caller advised that over 30 rounds had been fired.
As officers arrived on scene, the seriousness of the situation became immediately apparent when a round struck the pavement approximately two feet from an Oakdale Police officer.
Officers quickly deployed an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to assist in locating the source of the gunfire in the area of Post Road. Using the UAV, officers were able to identify and locate the individuals responsible. Both suspects were taken into custody without incident.
During the investigation, officers learned that the two men had been engaging in recreational target shooting. However, they failed to ensure there was a safe and adequate backdrop beyond their intended target, resulting in rounds traveling into an occupied area and striking a nearby building.
The two adult men, one from Modesto (25) and one from Empire (19), were arrested and booked into the Stanislaus County Jail on multiple charges.
