We’re so thankful for the 37 AT&T employees who volunteered to assemble 200 Foster Care Comfort & Care Kits for children entering foster care or transitioning placements. Many children enter care with very few personal belongings, so these kits provide comfort and basic essentials during a difficult transition. It was a wonderful morning of camaraderie and hands-on work! Thank you to all who participated.

June is . As summer is now here and more families head to pools, lakes and splash pads, water safety is especially important.

According to DCFS, drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death for children ages 1–4, and it can happen quickly and silently. Children should always be closely supervised around any water — including pools, bathtubs, baby pools, lakes and even buckets of water.

A few simple reminders:
💧 Stay within arm’s reach of young children near water
💧 Designate a distraction-free “water watcher”
💧 Empty baby pools and buckets immediately after use
💧 Use life jackets in lakes and rivers
💧 Learn CPR and emergency response basics

This National Safety Month, let’s work together to keep children safe, healthy and protected all summer long. Learn more at: https://dcfs.illinois.gov/for-families/safety/water-safety.html

Destiny* was just 22 when she became a mother. She was still figuring life out. Like many people her age, she spent time with friends and went to parties. She got in with the wrong crowd and was introduced to co***ne. At the time, it felt casual.

Then everything changed.

Destiny did not even know she was pregnant until shortly before she gave birth. Suddenly, she was holding a tiny baby boy who needed her for everything. And she needed help.

Because her baby was born substance exposed, Destiny was referred to the Intact Family Recovery Program at Lutheran Child and Family Services of Illinois. The program helps parents receive substance use treatment and support while their children remain safely in their care.

Instead of separating families, the goal is to surround them with the tools and guidance they need to grow stronger together. Destiny’s caseworker, Shanetha, stepped in and carefully monitored the baby’s safety while helping Destiny build a plan for recovery.

Destiny battled postpartum depression, and even leaving the house felt impossible. Doctors recommended medication, but her mom had doubts. Shanetha took the time to explain what Destiny was going through and how the treatment could help, showing the family that supporting her mental health was important in helping her become the mother she wanted to be.

With this support, she began taking small steps forward.

One afternoon she bundled up her baby and took him to the park. Just a simple walk. A few minutes outside. But it felt like a big victory. Soon those walks became regular outings filled with fresh air and sunshine with her little boy.

Destiny also attended outpatient therapy and completed parenting classes, learning new skills that helped her feel more confident caring for her baby. She was drug tested regularly. From the day her case opened until the day it closed, she never once had a positive drug test.

“Destiny was a model client,” Shanetha said. “She did everything we asked of her and more because she wanted to be the best mom she could be for her son.”

At the same time, Destiny began rebuilding her future. She returned to school and eventually became a Certified Nursing Assistant. She was hired at a hospital doing work she loved, caring for others.

Through it all, her family remained close. Destiny and her mom share a strong bond. She never wanted to disappoint her. Destiny wanted to be the kind of mother her own mom had been to her. Loving. Present. Strong.

Today, that is exactly who Destiny is becoming. She is working. Raising her son. And building a stable life filled with hope.

Your support helps make stories like Destiny’s possible. When parents receive the right support at the right time, children can grow up in the arms of the person who loves them most.

Today is Leslie Silenzi’s (formerly Lopez) 30-year anniversary with LCFS! Leslie started her career here as an intern from Concordia University Chicago and is currently the Senior Director of Development. For three decades, she has built relationships, shared stories of impact, and invited others into this meaningful work.

She was married last month, so her name has changed, but her heart for the mission remains the same. When you see Leslie Silenzi, it’s still the same familiar face and voice, committed to the children and families we serve and grateful for the work you make possible.

Please join us in celebrating Leslie’s 30 years of dedicated service to LCFS!

June is and as the weather warms up, car interiors get more dangerous for small children.

Here are life-saving safety tips from the NHTSA “Stop, Look, Lock Campaign”:
1. Never leave a child in a vehicle unattended for any length of time. Rolling windows down or parking in the shade does little to change the interior temperature of the vehicle.
2. Make it a habit to check your entire vehicle — especially the back seat — before locking the doors and walking away. Over 50% of pediatric vehicular heatstroke deaths are a result of a parent or caregiver forgetting a child in a car.
3. Ask your childcare provider to call if your child doesn’t show up for care as expected.
4. Place a personal item like a purse or briefcase in the back seat, as another reminder to look before you lock. Write a note or place a stuffed animal in the passenger's seat to remind you that a child is in the back seat.
5. Store car keys and fobs out of a child's reach and teach children that a vehicle is not a play area.
