Department of Energy Office of Scientific and Technical Information Extending the Reach and Impact of U.S. Department of Energy Research Results OSTI.GOV includes DOE science resources, as well as U.S.

The Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI), a unit of the Office of Science, fulfills agency-wide responsibilities to collect, preserve, and disseminate scientific and technical information (STI) emanating from DOE research and development (R&D) activities. OSTI provides access to scientific and technical information related to DOE missions through web-bas

ed searchable databases, offering ever-expanding sources of R&D information to DOE, the research community, and the science-attentive public. federal and global science information.

in 1975, the Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) was established and began operations. The agency was originally proposed in 1971 by President Nixon as a response to the energy shortages and rising fuel prices. In 1977, the ERDA was merged with the Federal Energy Administration to create the Department of Energy. Today is Benjamin Franklin’s birthday! Throughout his life, he published almanacs, opened libraries, helped draft the Declaration of Independence, and made many contributions to science. One of his most well-known experiments involved a key attached to a kite during a thunderstorm, which led to the invention of the lightning rod. See the January featured on DOE ScienceCinema, hosted by the DOE Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) - Beyond Pluto: The Search for the Edge of the Solar System https://www.osti.gov/sciencecinema/biblio/1259702

In July, we finally visited the last major body of our solar system, Pluto. But what lies beyond? The stellar wind from our Sun forms an enormous bubble in interstellar space. This “sphere of our Sun,” or heliosphere, extends far beyond Pluto and forms a protective cocoon that shields us from cosmic radiation. In this talk, we will travel to the edge of the solar system, peer into the structure and dynamics of the outer heliosphere as it interacts with the interstellar medium and anticipate the future of the solar system as it moves through our galactic neighborhood.

There are currently 118 known elements on the periodic table, but there wasn’t always that many! 94 of these elements are known to occur naturally on earth, and the remaining 24 can only be created in laboratories. For , let’s look at a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)-funded conference report from 1947 where researchers were presenting on the synthesis of 8 (at the time) new elements. January 6th is ! It is observed on the day of Gregor Mendel’s death as a way to honor both the father of genetics and the plants he used in his experiments. Mendel used bean and pea plants to observe the way traits were passed from parent to offspring, resulting in him discovering the foundations of modern genetics. Turn your eyes to the skies on ! Birds are one of the most diverse animal groups on Earth with over 10,000 different species. They impact science in interesting ways, too! Scientists’ research into birds ranges from their interactions with offshore wind turbines to the diseases they carry. To celebrate National Bird Day, find U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)-funded research about birds on DOE PAGES https://www.osti.gov/pages/search/journal-type:AM/subject:birds/availability:fulltext/page:2
