September 10 is World Su***de Prevention Day.

Today is a reminder that hope, connection, and support can make a difference. Every day, people face challenges that may not be visible to others, which is why kindness, compassion, and simply checking in on someone can have a lasting impact.

World Su***de Prevention Day encourages us to look out for one another, foster understanding, and remind those who may be struggling that they are not alone. Together, we can help create a community where people feel seen, supported, and valued.

As part of Su***de Prevention Month, the City of Oak Point is sharing resources such as Oak Point United Against Su***de, a local organization dedicated to raising awareness and providing information about available support services.

If you or someone you know needs immediate help, call or text 988 to reach the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7.

City Offices Closed in observance of the Labor Day Holiday.

Did you know? Labor Day exists to honor and recognize the contributions of American workers and the labor movement that improved working conditions and rights.

Labor Day is a federal holiday in the United States, observed on the first Monday of September, created to celebrate the social and economic achievements of American workers and the labor movement that fought for fair labor standards.
Its origins trace back to the late 19th century during the Industrial Revolution, when many workers endured long hours, low wages, and unsafe working conditions, including children as young as five or six working in factories and mines.

The holiday was first proposed by labor leaders such as Peter J. McGuire, co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, and Matthew Maguire, a machinist and secretary of the Central Labor Union, who suggested a day to honor workers.

The first Labor Day parade took place on September 5, 1882, in New York City, organized by the Knights of Labor, with around 10,000 workers marching from City Hall to Union Square

Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894, following widespread state-level recognition and amid labor unrest, including strikes by railroad workers

The holiday not only acknowledges the contributions of workers to the nationโ€™s prosperity and strength but also symbolizes the broader labor movementโ€™s efforts to secure better wages, reasonable working hours, and safer working conditions

Today, Labor Day is celebrated with parades, cookouts, and public events, serving both as a tribute to workers and as a cultural marker signaling the end of summer in the United States.

It remains a reminder of the historical struggles and achievements of laborers that shaped modern employment standards and workersโ€™ rights.

Building Inspector and Code Enforcement Officer Appreciation Day was on Tuesday September 1st. We might be a little late, but we truly appreciate the work Oak Pointโ€™s Code Enforcement Officer and Building Inspector Steven does everyday! Thank you Steven for the important work you do to help keep our community safe, comfortable, and thriving.
From inspecting construction and ensuring projects meet code requirements to addressing property concerns and helping residents understand the rules, their work often happens behind the scenes but it makes a big difference every day. Stevenโ€™s work begins before a houseโ€™s foundation has even been poured and continues all the way to the building final. His work ethic and rapport among the builders he works with stands out as firm but fair with a fantastic dedication to attention to detail.
August Building Stats of Stevenโ€™s Work
Building Inspections Completed: 242

Thank you, Steven, for your dedication, professionalism, attention to detail, and commitment to our community. We appreciate everything you do!
