On these pages you will find information on the Town, its history, the parks and amenities that make it a wonderful place to visit and live, and the various departments which make up the Town government. As North Carolina’s largest coastal community, the Town of Oak Island is known as a family-friendly beach community with a small-town atmosphere. The Town is also known for its ample public access
to the waters surrounding it and the beautiful live oak trees which are its namesake. The Town covers much of the island itself, and also includes areas on the mainland around both bridges, such as the golf course community of South Harbour Village. There are also thousands of undeveloped acres near the Swain’s Cut Bridge. The Town boasts 65 public beach accesses on miles of sandy beaches, as well as fishing docks and piers, boat ramps and many other access points to the Intracoastal Waterway and the Davis Canal, making it the perfect location for fishing, boating, kayaking and other water activities. The Town also has eight parks, ranging from a fishing pier at the west end of the island to a large park on the mainland complete with baseball and football fields. There is a skate park, a dog park, a cabana on the oceanfront with an observation deck and plenty of places to find a quiet spot to relax and enjoy the view. Area businesses, like piers and marinas, restaurants and ice cream shops, also help make vacationers feel welcome while catering to full-time residents. The Town’s Parks and Recreation Department also plans many events throughout the year, such as the Turtle Triathlon, pier fishing tournaments, craft shows, movies, Beach Day and fireworks as part of the North Carolina 4th of July Festival, and many more. The department also offers fitness programs and facilities and sports such as tennis, flag football and golfing. The Town owns the Oak Island Pier and a municipal golf course – the Oak Island Par 3 Golf Course at South Harbour. We hope you enjoy finding out more about the Town of Oak Island, and if you’re not already here, we look forward to seeing you soon!
