It's been a busy couple of weeks in our house and we've fallen a little behind. However, we cannot forget to bring you the next highlight in our series introducing our members to the community they serve. This week we bring you Firefighter Brenden Jess.

Hi, I’m Brenden Jess. I’ve been a firefighter with the Portage fire district since August 2022 and I got my fire one certification December 2022 outside of serving for my community. I am a full-time stainless steel welder and fabricator at Northern manufacturing in Oak Harbor.

It is that time of year again. We welcome Fire Catt to our community to complete our annual hose testing.

Every year all of the fire service hose in our station gets tested to NFPA standards to ensure it is ready to protect our community. This year we will be testing between 13,000 - 14,000 feet of various diameters of hose from 5" supply line to 1 1/2" attack lines and everything in-between. Nearly 5,000' of the tested line is large diameter supply line.

Historically, testing hose would take our department 6 weeks of training time to test our hoses. What took our department 6 weeks, Fire Catt completes in 2 days, freeing our training nights for needed education and practice.

Fire hose can fail for a variety of reasons and if it is going to fail, we want it to fail in a low stress and safe environment instead of in a life safety situation.

We're a little late tonight, but tonight's highlight is Firefighter Chris McClanahan.

My name is Chris McClanahan. I am a Firefighter with Portage Fire District and an EMT with Mid County EMS. I joined Portage Fire in 2020 because I wanted to help serve the community I was raised in and continue to live in. I have made many friendships and connections while serving on Portage that I would not have made otherwise. I encourage anyone who has ever considered serving to take the steps to apply. It’s a unique opportunity to make a real difference in your community.

Tonight we bring you our next installment of introducing our team helping to protect our community. Firefighter/Engineer in Training Dillon Stiger.

My name is Dillon Stiger. I have officially been a member of Portage Fire since 2018, but have been around the department nearly all my life as my grandfather also served on Portage for 37 years. Outside the department, I am married and have 2 beautiful little girls and work as a full time pilot. Being on Portage has been a really great experience for me, and it brings a lot of enjoyment being able to serve the community I’ve grown up/lived in my whole life.

Mutual Aid...

According to Wikipedia Mutual aid is a voluntary reciprocal exchange of resources and services for mutual benefit

Mutual Aid is part of the backbone of volunteer emergency services due to staffing shortages and the cost of equipment and resources needed to mitigate some emergencies.

In the last 24 hours, Portage Fire District has responded to 2 working structure fires and through the bitterly cold temperatures (nearly sub zero) that froze the guages on the panel of Engine 37 in a short period of time, our mutual aid partners stepped up and stood by our side.

Their crews stood by us in the cold. They helped to supply us with the water needed to extinguish the fires we were called for. And they helped to care for us and check us over when we needed it.

Thank you to our Mutual Aid partners:
Mid County EMS, Carroll Township EMS & Fire Department Association, Allen-Clay Joint Fire District, Harris-Elmore Fire Department, Lindsey Volunteer Fire Department, Erie Township Volunteer Fire Department, and Bay Township Volunteer Fire Department.

We would not be successful without your help and we will be there for you when you call us.

In going around town we've noticed a number of hydrant heroes* out there. THANK YOU FOR HELPING KEEP YOUR COMMUNITY SAFE!!

Thank you to all of our hydrant heros throughout this last snow storm.

*This was far from an extensive search for cleared hydrants and just ones we happened to see.
