SATURDAY: EMS REMEMBRANCE DAY

I do apologize being a day late.

As EMS week wraps up, it is important to remember "how we got here". Before 1979, Robinson Funeral Home was basically our area EMS. On January 1, 1979, Mid County Joint Ambulance District began operation.

Since then a lot has changed. When EMS was beginning it was primarily a ride to the hospital, with some first aid, all out of the back of a hearse. Today, we are trained and have equipment to do so much more.

We have cardiac monitors capable of 12-Lead EKGs, pacing, and defibrillation. There is also trauma equipment, patient moving equipment, forced entry equipment.

All of us can administer at least some medications, including the EMTs. AEMTs can start IVs and give more medications, interpret cardiac rhythms, and manually defibrillate. Paramedics can interpret 12-Lead EKGs, use a pacemaker, and give even more medications. We all have advanced airway capabilities and stop the bleed training.

A lot has changed, but we would not be anywhere without those who came before us. We continue to build on the foundation they provided.

Thank you all, for improving outcomes, together.

Improving Outcomes, Together

Today I would like to recognize a few groups for their advocacy efforts.

Ohio EMS Chiefs Association is an organization that represents Ohio's third service EMS leaders and agencies. This group comes together and advocates for EMS specific issues, both locally and within state government. They also are shaping EMS leaders of the future, and provide common ground for great networking opportunities. Agencies in this organization include over 15 countywide EMS agencies, and many, many other third service EMS agencies. Third service EMS in Ohio is integral to healthcare delivery, not only in our numbers, but also our focus on EMS delivery.
I invite you to visit their website to learn more.
www.oemsca.org

National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians is another group that is helpful as it pertains to EMS related issues. They advocate for EMS at the Federal level, as well as provide structured content for EMS training which can be brought home for local training. Our active shooter response training is a part of their content. MCEMS will hopefully be a verified Training Center so we can offer more of their content. I invite you to visit their website to learn more.

National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) is another group which is important for EMS. They provide a foundation for a standard of training and testing, but also as of late have been very actively involved in the advocacy for EMS. I invite you to visit their website to learn more.

Thank you all, for improving outcomes, together.

FRIDAY: EMS RECOGNITION DAY

I would like to take this opportunity to recognize all of the staff at Mid-County EMS. Each and every one of our staff members work long hours serving our community. Both the staff and their families make great sacrifice for others, many of them they don't know. It truly does take a special person to do what they do, see what they see, smell what they smell, feel what they feel. Without them, we would not have the service delivery we currently do.

If you see any of our staff members out and about, please help me thank them for all that they do for their community.

Improving Outcomes, Together

An often forgotten team are those who work so hard behind the scenes.

Our Board Members are those who represent each entity of our Joint Ambulance District:
Salem Twp: Ryan Hetrick
Oak Harbor: Jackie Macko
Rocky Ridge: Randy Brown

A couple others who also play VERY IMPORTANT roles:
Fiscal Officer: Aaron Avery
Medical Director: Ken Mapes MD

Thank you for improving outcomes, together.

THURSDAY: SAVE-A-LIFE DAY
YOU TOO CAN BE A LIFESAVER!!!

People can bleed out very quickly, before EMS arrives.
To learn how to Stop-The-Bleed, please visit:

When someone's heart stops, their chance of survival goes down 10% every minute of no CPR.
To learn how to do Hands-Only CPR, please visit:

Improving Outcomes, Together

Another partner we would like to recognize is Portage Fire District (PFD). When they go out, we typically go too, to support them. And when we need support, we call them back. To accomplish better outcomes, we get together from time to time and train on things we would ask of them, like patient lifting and moving, and driving us to the hospital, as a couple of examples.

Thank you, PFD, for improving outcomes, together.

WEDNESDAY: EMS FOR CHILDREN DAY

"I only looked away for a second..." Infants and toddlers learn by putting things in their mouths. And when that happens, it can be pretty upsetting. There is a resource we use, that is also available to you: the Poison Control Center. They are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and are poison experts. Someone swallowed something they shouldn't have? Give them a call. 1-800-222-1222. Or visit their website, www.poison.org.

For our pediatric patients, we use pediatric-specific training, treatment guidelines, and equipment to better prepare us, for the children. We also participate in different pediatric outreach events, and talk to the children about injury prevention and first aid basics.

Here, to help you. Improving outcomes, together.

Improving Outcomes, Together

EMS mutual aid partners are very important for helping when we cannot be there. So, we would like to thank the following agencies for their help in our time of need, to help us, help you.
Carroll Twp
Erie Twp
Harris-Elmore
Allen-Clay
Thank you, EMS mutual aid partners, for improving outcomes, together.

TUESDAY: EMS SAFETY DAY
To keep our patients safe, we employ a few strategies. We do regular training on patient lifting and moving, stressing patient and provider safety. Also, we utilize the "Binder Lift" and "Binder Transfer" devices by PHASE Intl.

To keep our providers safe, we use the Stryker Emergency Care Power Load, Power Cot, and Expedition Chair systems. Also, for certain call types, we utilize ballistic vests, high visibility vests, and life jackets as a part of our protective equipment.

To help keep the public safe, we heavily stress ambulance operational safety, during orientation as well as "refreshers" along the way. This is accomplished through a variety of ways, and the use of lights and sirens and intersection safety are among our top priorities. We also participate in community outreach events, where we review Stop The Bleed and the use of the File of Life.
