One of the many things that make our island unique are the views.

A year ago I discovered beach view farm trail on one of my morning runs and I now frequent it often.

It is easy to get to being just a short turn off swantown road here in Oak Harbor. watching the sun come up with the views and the wildlife in the morning is breathtaking. If you have not visited before it is well worth it!

I’d like to take a moment to thank everyone who answered my plea to help fill spots on the planning commission. It has been a long time since we have had a full commission and we received 5 applications for 3 openings.

If you want to have a more active say in the conversations Oak Harbor is having, we still have the following Board and commission openings (experience nice but not necessary, and not all require you to live in city limits):

Arts Commission (1): Help determine what future art pieces and programs the city will have, where they go, what the arts budget is spent on etc…

Historic Preservation Commission (2): identify and encourage conservation of historic resources, help maintain our historic registry, and raise community awareness of our history.

Lodging Tax Advisory Committee (3): This one is a little unique as it requires three individuals from hotel/lodging, and three individuals who are eligible to receive the funds (organizations that apply for LTAC grants). Typically the city releases around $450,000 in grants to help promote tourism. Help determine who will receive those grants. This one meets a few times a year during the grant cycle (typically mid/late summer to early fall).

Police Community Advisory Board (3): Have thoughts on local policing? Ideas on how we can improve? Want to help review new policies? This one is for you.

Salary Commission (1): Meets once or twice a year. Help set the salary for council and the mayor.

Unless otherwise mentioned, most meet once a month. The time commitment is small, but the impact can be large. Come join us on the dais, I would love to serve with you.

If you have someone else who you think might be a good fit, please share the information with them.

In the past 24 hours someone had a field day with graffiti in windjammer park.

I went to clean it on my way to work today and not ten minutes after I started staff was already there to take care of it, and police were taking photos.

Sometimes graffiti can be in hidden placed like play structures that can take a day or two to be noticed. If you see something (especially hidden) I encourage you to fill out the form so staff can address it as quickly as possible.

I could use your help! I’m looking for people to serve with me on the Oak Harbor Planning Commission. Anyone living in city limits is open to apply, but we could certainly use someone in real estate or a developer to help fill in some of the gaps.

Maybe you see some things in Oak Harbor that you think can improve. Or perhaps you are just someone with a good mind for city planning. The planning commission gives recommendations to city council on things like zoning, development, comprehensive plan etc…

Meetings are usually held on the second Tuesday of the month at 6 pm. There are also some materials to read over before the meeting. I’d estimate the total time commitment between 2-6 hours a month for everything.

If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. Or if you’d like to apply you can do so on the link below:

I can say anecdotally this has made a difference on many of the downtown business, but it was nice to hear some actual data to back it up. Looking forward to seeing the full mid session report soon.

Oak Harbor council members were pleased with the progress of the falconry-based abatement program.

On our June 2nd city council meeting we will be officially voting on the much talked about vessel, trailer, recreational and oversized vehicle parking ordinance. This would affect RV, Trailer, or boats over 22 feet in length parked on city streets.

The main changes from when this was brought up previously is two fold. First an acknowledgement that this should not be a hardship to small businesses who perhaps have a trailer in front of their home they use for work. As long as it is actively being used/moved for work, it would be allowed (as long as it does not pose a safety issue). Additionally residents would be able to obtain a (free) parking permit that would allow an oversized vehicle in front of their own residence for a 14 day period (this can be done three times per calendar year).

You can read all the details on page 32 of the packet here: https://oakharbor.gov/AgendaCenter/ViewFile/Agenda/_06022026-630

Or if you would like to see the discussion from out last meeting it can be viewed at the 1:02:00 timestamp on the previous meeting here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twXXjOiC2KY

If you would like to contribute your feedback for all of council and staff to see you can either come to the meeting at city hall on June 2nd at 5:30 or email your public comment to the city clerk at: [email protected].

I had the opportunity last week to speak to the Rotary Club of Oak Harbor.

I always enjoy the opportunity to come out and address local groups. I prefer a more informal style - giving those in attendance to ask questions and drive the narrative on topics they would like to hear more about. Often times I learn something too, and it is a great way to get community feedback.

If your organization has a meeting in Oak Harbor they would like me to come out to in the future, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Many thanks to all those volunteers who dedicated countless hours putting on our yearly memorial day gathering.

Gratitude for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and their loved ones who continue to keep their memory alive.

I get it, not everyone loves busy tourism weeks. Those living nearby can have their daily lives impacted. Traffic could be a hassle, safety can be a concern Things could always be done a little better in the future.

Today I made it a point to drive around town during part of the Ren Faire. The amount of people dressed up I saw in our local businesses was amazing. Thousands of tourists came to visit our island, putting money into our local economy. This can help those same businesses support their families. These same businesses often give thousands in donations to local nonprofits and individuals, and maybe they will have a little more to give back this year. It is a very circular relationship.

To all those wonderful individuals who made todays event happen I give a hearty huzzah and well done! This has been a wonderful success for the village of Mysthaven, and the city of Oak Harbor.
