So last night a football player collapsed during an NFL game and needed CPR to give him a chance at life. We wish Damar Hamlin the best and hope he has a quick and full recovery.

However, we want to point out that after witnessing someone else do CPR on a person, the other players weren't able to mentally return to their jobs, the coaches weren't able to return to their jobs, the referees theirs, the announcers and commentators were visibly shaken and stumbled over their emotions the rest of the broadcast.

You know who gave the best treatment and best chance of survival to Demar? AND, probably went back in service within minutes of dropping him off at the ER to take the next call?

This is why we are proud to be Firefighter/Paramedics. Our members do, and see things that would cause most people to 'take a break', and yet they get back in service to take the next call.

Great job to the bystanders and medical crews last night and to the Cincinnati medics that handled that call.

Please take a First Aid/CPR class so you can help in an emergency. We also don't think that message has been pushed enough in all this.

On this day, 21 years ago:
- 246 people went to sleep, knowing they had a flight in the morning.
- 2,606 people went to sleep in preparation for work in the morning.
- 343 firefighters went to sleep knowing they might fight a fire and save a life the next day.
- 60 police officers went to sleep in preparation for morning patrol.
- 8 paramedics went to sleep before their morning shift.

None of them saw past 9:59am on Sept 11, 2001.

In one single moment, life would never be the same. And since then, many more have lost their lives because of that day in 2001 - - while so many others still suffer physically, emotionally, and mentally.

Tonight before you go to sleep, in preparation for your day tomorrow, and to honor those who perished, please consider making the decision to never take one second of your life for granted. Not. One. Second.

Be kind.
Love intensely.
Work hard.
Volunteer.
Make every day count.

And live with the same spirit of compassion, cooperation, love, and resiliency demonstrated in our country on September 12th, 2001.

Congratulations Chief Kasper!

The Oak Forest City Council recently named Gary Kasper as the city’s new fire chief. Kasper has been with the department for more than 20 years, most recently serving as deputy fire chief.

Kasper has been a catalyst for change within the fire department – implementing new policies and procedures, enhancing training techniques, improving service delivery, and maintaining accreditation and accountability. He has worked with the community on fire prevention education, collaborated with other city agencies to devise a disaster mitigation plan, and created a training matrix system to help firefighters build and enhance their skills.

Kasper is a member of several professional organizations, including the International Association of Fire Chiefs, the Illinois Association of Fire Chiefs, and MABAS 24 Chiefs’ Association. He also recently completed the chief fire officer certification course provided by the Illinois Association of Fire Chiefs.

Congratulations, Chief Kasper!
