Last Friday, Milwaukee Area Technical College had a 9/11 day of remembrance on its Oak Creek Campus. We honored the memory of the police officers, fire fighters and EMTs who gave their lives on that fateful day. They ran towards danger to provide safety and protection for others. We would like to extend our gratitude to all who made the event so meaningful. A special thanks to Mount Pleasant Police Chief Robert Botsch for sharing his profound words with all of us. We will never forget.

This Friday we come together to remember. Join MATC Protective Services for our 9/11 Commemoration Event, marking 25 years since September 11, 2001. The program features an invocation from Milwaukee Police Department Chaplain George Papachristou, a key address from Village of Mount Pleasant Police Chief Robert Botsch, and a memorial dedication led by MATC President Dr. Anthony Cruz. We will pause for a moment of silence and a musical tribute, and a light reception will follow. Friday, September 11, 1 p.m., at the MATC Oak Creek Campus Cafeteria Patio, 6665 S. Howell Avenue. All are welcome. Questions? Email [email protected].

Week one of the First Day Jail Officer Academy, Class #36 is in the books. A big thank you to our instructors who set the tone this week, teaching the standards and expectations these cadets will carry into every shift. We're also grateful to Milwaukee County Community Reintegration Center for their partnership and support in getting this class off to a strong start. The work correctional officers do is demanding and often goes unseen, and it starts right here with the people willing to train them well. Proud of this group already.

Criminal Justice students, your fall just got a lot more useful. Every week this semester, CJSO is bringing you three ways to get ahead, all free and open to every CJS student. Get one-on-one help from instructors on Mondays and Thursdays, hear from working officers, detectives and CSI professionals at our Tuesday Lunch and Learn series, and train with Wisconsin Athletic Club coaches every Wednesday. Sessions run noon to 1 p.m. in Responder Commons, Room A-128, September through December. Bring your lunch, bring a friend, and show up. Questions? Reach faculty advisor D. Braun at [email protected].

Seats are filling for one of our most talked-about in-service trainings. The Officer-Involved Shooting runs Friday, September 11 at the Oak Creek Campus, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Room A110.

Six officers who have lived through an OIS share what really happened. How the incident unfolded, how they reacted, the mistakes made, and the toll it took on them, their families, and their departments. You will walk away with resources, an understanding of the physical and mental stressors to expect, and strategies to manage life after the event.

This one is honest, and it sticks with you. Eight hours of in-service credit. $49 per person.
