Yesterday, the Oak Brook Fire Department celebrated an important milestone in a new firefighter’s career. Firefighter/Paramedics Braden Glennon and Nate Betsinger recently completed their one year probationary period. After a year of intensive training, including attending the NIPSTA Fire Academy, and demonstrating exceptional character and commitment to their craft, the Oak Brook Board of Fire and Police Commissioners accepted their permanent appointment to the department. Congratulations!

The Oak Brook Fire Department is proud to announce that we are one of 260 fire departments, fire protection districts, or EMS providers across the State of Illinois that have been awarded the 2026 Small Equipment Grant. This grant, in the amount of $21,760.00, will allow us to purchase a cardiac thumper, continuous CPR device and finish outfitting our front-line fleet with advanced life support equipment critical during a cardiac arrest, not only providing high-quality continuous CPR, but also freeing up hands to perform other important lifesaving activities during the event.

Thank you to IL Fire Marshal Pankow for the award and to the Village of Oak Brook staff, both within the fire department and across the Village, including the Finance Department, that worked collaboratively to gather the information necessary to apply.

After nearly 34 years of service to the Oak Brook Fire Department and having served the Village of Oak Brook with dedication, honor and pride, Battalion Chief Jeff Marciniak has announced his intent to retire, completing his last shift the morning of June 21st, 2026. Battalion Chief Marciniak has been steadfast in his service to the Village, always looking to move the organization and those within forward. Over the course of his long and successful career, he has served as a Firefighter/Paramedic, a Lieutenant, and a Battalion Chief since November of 2005. In addition, Jeff was also a fire inspector, a fire investigator, a member of both the MABAS Division 12 Hazardous Materials and Technical Rescue Teams and often served as the department’s Acting Fire Chief while the Chief is away. During his time with the Oak Brook Fire Department, Battalion Chief Marciniak has always been willing to step forward and assist the department where needed, serving in nearly every capacity possible within the organization. Several years ago, Jeff served as the department’s training officer and began to move the training division along the path of success realized today and most recently has been the department’s EMS Coordinator. Battalion Chief Marciniak has been a mentor to many throughout his career and undoubtedly leaves with a wealth of knowledge not only of the fire service, but of the history of the Village of Oak Brook.

To celebrate Jeff and his successful career as he heads off into retirement, please join us on Wednesday, June 24th at Station #94 at 0900 hrs.

Today, we welcome Zach back to shift in Oak Brook and look forward to his continued learning, career development, and service to our wonderful community.

The Dr. Joseph Hartmann Award, presented by Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, recognizes paramedics who demonstrate exceptional skill and teamwork in providing lifesaving emergency care in pre-hospital environment. Named in honor of Dr. Joseph Hartmann, the hospital's first medical director of emergency services, the award celebrates those who go above and beyond in critical situations to make a difference when it matters most.

Out of tens of thousands of EMS runs in the Good Samaritan Hospital System annually and over fifty nominees this year, we are proud to receive the 2026 Hartmann First Runner-up Award. In November of 2025, Lieutenant/Paramedic Rob Ebsen along with Firefighter/Paramedics Seth Bowlan, Eric Focht, Fouad Samawi, and Johnny Walylko responded to Rush Medical for a patient who’s condition turned critical while in surgery. Despite the grave circumstances, the Oak Brook EMS crew put their training and skills to task, working through multiple protocols and life saving interventions. Demonstrating leadership under pressure, quick thinking, and teamwork, crews transported the patient to Elmhurst Hospital and through the efforts of all involved, the patient eventually experienced a full recovery.

On Friday, the team was presented with their award by Good Samaritan EMS Medical Director Dr. Thomas Grudowski and EMS System Coordinator Frank Kolsky.
