Owyhee Irrigation District

Owyhee Irrigation District Supplying irrigation water to over 167,000 acres of land in Adrian, Nyssa, and Ontario since 1932. Irrigated agriculture is the region's primary industry.

The major drainage system is the Owyhee River, a tributary of the Snake River. The Owyhee Project, constructed by the Bureau of Reclamation, harnesses the unpredictable Owyhee River to provide water to the fertile soils of the Owyhee and Central Snake River Valleys. In 2008 the valley celebrated the 75th anniversary of the dedication of the Owyhee Dam. In 1925, after studying various reports and p

lans made by the Government engineers, State cooperative boards, and private companies, after conducting further investigation of their own, the Bureau issued a feasibility report recommending the construction of the Owyhee Project. Work began on the storage dam and canal system in 1928, and the first water was delivered to the project lands in 1935. The Owyhee Project was designed to supply water to the entire project area by gravity flow from the Owyhee Reservoir. But, because the Owyhee River's flow is frequently too low to supply the necessary water, privately-constructed pumping plants provide Snake River water to lower-lying project lands. These plants are operated under a 1936 contract between the Bureau of Reclamation and several irrigation districts.

Our work creating a wildland reduced vegetation buffer zone proved itself during the Lytle Fire June 22nd 2026. The fire burned up to and stopped across five miles of the reduced risk area created. One primary residence was directly protected near Cow Hollow. The fire burned to the buffer zone and stopped within a few hundred feet of this home.
This is the second fire this year where the WRRG buffer zone has stopped fire spread. The Mendiola fire near Adrian stopped at the Kingman Lateral and to the south at our water supply access road.

Owyhee Irrigation District has partnered with BLM through a Wildland Risk Reduction Grant (WRRG) to create this buffer zone along over 72 miles of wildland interface stretching from the communications repeaters above the Owyhee Dam north to the Snake River near Annex. This reduced vegetation area borders the Owyhee Irrigation North Canal and laterals. The project focuses on widening that safe area to protect us all.
Vegetation reduction is done through herbicide applications, grading, and mowing.
