In recognition of September being designated as Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, the Nutley Town Hall and Department of Public Affairs and Health have been illuminated in a beautiful teal color. Please take a moment to read the Proclamation below which was read at the September 1st Board of Commissioners meeting.

With another heat wave forecast this week, bringing high temperatures and elevated humidity, the Nutley Health Department reminds residents to take precautions to stay safe during the coming days. Please check on family members, friends, neighbors, and anyone who may be especially vulnerable to extreme heat, including older adults, young children, and those with chronic medical conditions.

Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, avoid prolonged outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day, wear lightweight, light-colored clothing, and seek air-conditioned spaces whenever possible. If you do not have air conditioning, spend time in air-conditioned places such as libraries, movies, malls or other public buildings during the hottest hours of the day. Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle, even for a short time.

By taking a few simple precautions and looking out for one another, our community can help everyone stay safe throughout this period of extreme heat.

Thank you to everyone that came out yesterday for our Firecracker Family Fun Run! It was a great event and we had such a great turn out despite the heat! Thank you to the Kingsland Manor and all their volunteers for their hospitality! A big thanks to the Nutley Parks and Public Property and DPW crews for assisting in clearing the park paths for the run. You guys are the best!

It was unfortunate that the fireworks were cancelled last night but it was a decision that was not made lightly. The safety of our residents and patrons are our main priority. We are working on an alternate date and will post that as soon as it is confirmed.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued heat advisories for multiple states, warning of dangerous to record-breaking heat across the eastern and central U.S. through the July 4 weekend. Mayor Kelly and the Nutley Health Department (NHD) urge residents to take steps to avoid heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

When the weather turns extremely hot and humid, it’s vital to drink plenty of fluids, spend time in cool places and reduce or reschedule any physical activity. Please remember to check on elderly family members and neighbors to make sure they are safe.
To avoid health complications from excessive heat:
• Drink plenty of water or other non-alcoholic beverages.
• Make sure children and the elderly are drinking water, and ensure that persons with mobility problems have adequate fluids in easy reach.
• If you do not have air conditioning, spend time in air-conditioned places such as libraries, movies, malls or other public buildings during the hottest hours of the day.
• Wear loose and light-colored clothing. Wear a hat when outdoors.
• Reduce physical activity or reschedule it for cooler times of the day.
• Don't leave children, a frail elderly or disabled person, or pets in an enclosed car -- not even for a minute -- as temperatures can quickly climb to dangerous levels.
• Talk to your health care provider about any medicine or drugs you are taking. Certain medications -- such as tranquilizers and drugs used to treat Parkinson's disease -- can increase the risk of heat-related illness.

People suffering heatstroke can go from appearing normal to extremely ill in a matter of minutes. Victims may have hot, dry skin, a high body temperature of 106 degrees or more, an absence of sweat, and a rapid and strong pulse. Victims may become delirious or unconscious. Persons suffering from heatstroke need immediate medical attention.
Heat exhaustion is a milder illness that may take several days of high temperatures to develop. Victims may have pale, clammy skin and sweat profusely. They may feel tired, weak or dizzy and have headaches or sometimes cramps, but their body temperature will remain close to normal.

Mayor John V. Kelly, III and the Nutley Board of Commissioners are pleased to announce the plans for the Township of Nutley’s 2026 July 4th celebration scheduled for Saturday, July 4, beginning at 6:00 pm.

“As in previous years, Nutley will be the destination to celebrate our nation's historic 250th birthday! We are looking forward to continuing our time-honored tradition of celebrating our nation's birth with family friendly entertainment, food, and of course, fireworks!”, commented Mayor Kelly.

Food vendors will line Franklin Avenue and UltimateEntertainment will be on hand to provide music and games. Face painters, magicians and balloon artists will also be in attendance. The fireworks are scheduled to start at dusk.

TRAFFIC ALERT: Franklin Avenue will be closed between Chestnut and Church St. beginning at 3:30pm and will not reopen until cleanup is finished. Please use caution while traveling in this area.

Established by the Alzheimer’s Association in 2014, Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month is dedicated to encouraging a global conversation about the brain and Alzheimer’s and other dementia. To learn more about the Alzheimer’s Association, available resources and how you can get involved to support the cause, visit Alzheimer's Association.

Throughout the month of June, wear purple — the color of the Alzheimer’s movement — to raise awareness of the disease.

On Sunday, June 21st, municipal buildings in Nutley will be illuminated in purple, under the direction of the Nutley Department of Parks and Public Property.

The Nutley Department of Public Affairs and Health will be hosting the Essex County Division of Senior Services on Thursday, July 30th, 10am - 3pm at the Nutley Department of Public Affairs and Health, 149 Chestnut Street, where they will be distributing Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program Vouchers to eligible seniors. Residents can also visit any of the markets listed below.

Come celebrate the life of Nutley resident Annie Oakley with a special screening of a new documentary, North Star, at the Nutley Museum and Historical Society at 65 Church Street on Wednesday, June 10, at 6:30 p.m. Annie, who lived in Nutley for about a dozen years, died one hundred years ago this November.
