According to AAA, more than a quarter of a million child pedestrian injuries and fatalities over the last decade have occurred between 3 and 7 pm (https://www.ace.aaa.com/information/aaa-in-the-community/youth-and-family-programs/aaa-schools-open-drive-carefully.html -backToSchool). With the school year starting, the Nutley Police want to remind motorists and pedestrians to be alert and cautious while following traffic laws including crossing at crosswalks, yielding to pedestrians in crosswalks, obeying speed limits in school zones, and not passing school buses that have their arms extended and flashing lights activated. Also, we would like to advise motorists that this is the first year 6th grade students will be attending John Walker Middle School on Franklin Ave. and there will subsequently be more vehicles in the area during drop-off and pick-up times. We encourage motorists to plan alternate routes of travel during these times to alleviate congestion. Let's work together to keep our children safe, remember, school's open, drive carefully!

The Nutley Police are joining the NJ Division of Highway Traffic and law enforcement partners across the nation for the end of summer impaired driving crackdown. The Nutley Police want to warn resident of two separate law enforcement impersonation scams perpetrated against residents. The first involved the actors sending a text message to the resident implicating the resident had subscribed to an illicit website and requesting a call back at a number provided in the message. When the resident called the number they were provided with a different number to contact the “Federal Trade Commission.” When the resident called the number they were advised it was illegal to subscribe to illicit websites and could be arrested for doing so. The caller then told the resident they had been implicated in money laundering and explained the resident’s name was used in multiple banks in multiple locations. They advised the resident that they would need to transfer a large sum of money to the Treasury Department and provided bank account information to complete the transfer. Shortly thereafter the resident received a phone call from another party who spoofed the Nutley Police Department’s phone number and identified himself as Nutley Police Officer “John Morris.” He told the resident the Treasury Department put him in contact with them because of the illicit websites and money laundering. He instructed the resident to follow the Treasury Department’s instructions to avoid being arrested.

The second scam involved a party calling a different resident and identifying himself as “Capt. David Gilbert” with the Essex County Sheriff’s Office. He advised the resident that there were two bench warrants for their arrest and explained they were tracking the resident and not to disconnect the call. “Capt. Gilbert” instructed the resident to get a sum of cash and bring it to an address in Newark where they could post bail. The resident was told their signature would be compared to the one that was on file and if the two matched their money would be returned or they would be given a new court date.
Neither of the parties identified on the calls in these two incidents were actual law enforcement officers. The Nutley Police have observed an increase in reports of scams involving individuals posing as local law enforcement officers and requesting that residents make a payment to avoid arrest.
The actors in these incidents will identify themselves as being from a local police or sheriff’s department, and they may even use the name of actual law enforcement officers. There have also been instances where they changed the name displayed on their caller ID, so they appear to be calling from a local law enforcement agency.
It’s important to understand that law enforcement will not call you to demand that you pay a fine over the phone and threaten to arrest you if you don’t agree to make a payment . This includes requests to pay with cash, credit cards, gift cards, payment apps, Bitcoin, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers.
If you receive a text message from an individual identifying themselves as law enforcement with a message to call them back about an urgent court or law enforcement matter, do not call the number they provide in the message. Look up the police department’s official number yourself, and then call them directly. Thank you.

The Nutley Police want to warn residents of a "utility scam" perpetrated against an elderly resident yesterday. The suspect responded to the resident's door and advised her he was "with gas and electric supply" stating he needed to check her home for a possible gas leak. He was allowed into the home and went through every room. The suspect left after about ten minutes. Today the resident noticed a sum of cash was missing from her wallet. The suspect from this incident is depicted in the photos above. Anyone who sees or can assist in identifying this individual is asked to contact the Nutley Police at (973) 284-4940. Also, we would like to warn residents that this is a common scam, where the suspects are able to gain confidence posing as employees of utility companies. Remember to always ask for and check the utility representative's photo identification card before admitting the person onto your premises. If you have any questions or concerns about the identification or the reason for any unscheduled visits, contact the police immediately. Also, contact the utility company directly and ask if they sent a representative to your home. Stay safe, thank you!

The Nutley Police Department responded to Rt. 21 for a significant motor vehicle accident last night. The accident involved a vehicle that was traveling on Rt. 21 North and collided with the center median before coming over the median and striking two other vehicles that were traveling on Rt. 21 South. Several passengers sustained serious injuries and were transported to local hospitals for treatment. The incident is being investigated by the Nutley Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor's Office. Please drive safely, thank you.

The Nutley Police Department is requesting the public’s assistance in locating Ms. Jessica DiBello who was reported missing by her father on 7/23/2026. Ms. DiBello was released from Newark Beth Israel Hospital on 7/22/2026 at 12:13 pm and has not returned home. Ms. DiBello was last seen wearing a blue button-down shirt with blue jeans and is known to frequent local parks. Anyone who sees or comes in contact with Ms. DiBello is asked to please contact the Nutley Police Department at (973) 284-4940

The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC) is taking appointments for customers to obtain licenses and registrations to operate e-bikes, in accordance with a new law enacted in January 2026 (P.L.2025, c.285) . The specific requirements, and step-by-step instructions, for e-bike licensing and registration are outlined on the NJMVC’s e-bike webpage (https://www.nj.gov/mvc/vehicletopics/ebike.htm). The webpage includes detailed instructions and guidance — including relevant forms, FAQs, the NJ Driver Manual, and a newly-updated E-bike & Moped Manual — to simplify and explain the new e-bike requirements.
The term “e-bike” commonly refers to both low-speed electric bicycles and motorized bicycles as defined in N.J.S.A. 39:1-1:
1. Low-speed electric bicycle — a pedal assisted bicycle with a helper motor that only provides assistance while pedaling up to 20 mph.
2. Motorized bicycle — a pedal assisted bicycle with either:
1. An engine under 50 cubic centimeters;
2. An electric motor that provides assistance while pedaling or with a throttle up to 28 mph; or
3. An electric motor that provides assistance while using a throttle, up to 15 mph.
E-bike Usage Requirements Under the New Law
1. Age and License
To operate an e-bike in New Jersey, riders must be at least 15 years old and have either (1) an e-bike license or (2) a valid driver license.
2. Registration and Insurance
All e-bikes in New Jersey must be registered with the NJMVC.
Only motorized bicycles are required to have insurance coverage.
Low-speed electric bicycles do not require insurance.
3. Helmet Use
A helmet is mandatory for all e-bike riders.
E-bike Licensing
E-bike riders can now schedule initial permit appointments at NJMVC Licensing Centers to begin the process of obtaining a license if they are at least 15 years old and do not already possess a New Jersey driver license. Individuals who already have a valid driver license (ages 17 and up) do not need a separate license to ride an e-bike.
For individuals who do not already have a driver license, they will have to complete a multi-step process that includes obtaining a permit, passing a knowledge test, practicing e-bike operation, and passing a road test before receiving their license to legally ride an e-bike.
Individuals under the age of 18 will also need to provide a completed parent consent form, if a parent or guardian is not accompanying the minor at their appointment. Everyone will also need this application form: BA-208.pdf

E-bike Registration
E-bike registration appointments are now available for booking at NJMVC Vehicle Centers, and the entire process can be completed in a single visit. The first appointments for e-bike registration will be Friday, June 26.
To register an e-bike, customers need to complete a registration form (form BA-49EB), and provide proof of identity, proof of liability insurance (only for those registering motorized bicycles), and proof of ownership, which may include the following:
1. A Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin (MCO);
2. Purchase receipt;
3. A notarized bill of sale; or
4. An affidavit from the current owner, as documented on the registration form.
Individuals under the age of 18 will also need to provide a completed parent consent form, if a parent or guardian is not accompanying the minor at their appointment.
Upon registering the e-bike, riders will receive two (2) license plate stickers to affix and display on both sides of the e-bike’s front fork.
